nVidia's GPU killing driver

lol, how the heck did you do that? I didn't know upside down letters were in the ascii character set. btw major bullet dodged by me as I just upgraded to a Radeon 5850 from my 9800gt avoiding this latest driver debacle.
 
I'm courious, i wanna know Anand's thinking about this happening.

Now the problem is: people with cards covered by seller warranty have no problem (apart from time wasted for RMA). If my card is older than two years and is out of warranty, who'll pay? Me? 😱

Nobody. When you install nvidia drivers it clearly states that no matter what they are no responsible if your card explodes and destroys your house or whatever. Since my card is out of warranty I get nothing from anyone and I had to buy a 5770 to replace the 8500GT i'm using as a backup solution. Good thing I was looking to replace my card or I would be much more angry at this but I don't think i'll be buying an nvidia card again as long as ATi has similar or better price/performance.

THAT'S ABSURD!!
Burn the vga after installing Windows Certified Driver! I hope in a class action of US users. Really Nvidia deserve to be sued fo this.
 
I have to wonder the board partners would have to pick up the bill for this if the card is still under warranty. I guess depending on how wide spread this is, Nvidia may pay for this? We'll see how it plays out I guess.

LOL so if they design a robotic arm that comes out of the video card and shoots you in the head, they are not responsible for your death.

Actually once you get physically injured things change drastically since it becomes strict liability. Thus if the card explodes and gives you a small burn then nVidia has to pay for everything though you would have to bring suit. If the card explodes and takes out your house when you're away then you need to prove negligence.
 
Well maybe they aren't liable de jure, but that's one large PR desaster so who knows if they won't do something nevertheless..
 
I always thought that the BIOS would override any driver specific fan settings if the GPU got too hot. On my previous card this seemed to be the case when setting a manual fan speed ...

My ATi card has that, and AFAIK lots of nVidia cards.
 
I will still get a Fermi card if it meets my criteria. If not, 5850 it is.

At least this is getting serious attention and will make nVidia think twice on future driver releases.

Well in my case it looks like the PSU was the culprit. I replaced the PSU with one from a secondary system this weekend and everything else seems to be okay thankfully. Whether the drivers helped to push it over the edge or if it was just coincidence, I don't know.

The PSU that died was an Ultra X-finity 500W, and according to the PSU calculator I used, my system only needs around 350 watts. The replacement PSU is the X-finity 600W and I noticed that both of the fans inside are dead. Looked online, and it seems like a ton of people had the same problem with the fans dying on this particular model (X-finity 600W) after one or two years. They're sending a replacement (Ultra LSP-650), but with my experience with these last two Ultra PSUs I'm not exactly confident in how the new PSU will hold up.

I dunno, the fact that it takes a driver that stops the fan from spinning to cause an instability on NVidia drivers says something for how stable they generally are otherwise. Unlike, say, ATI drivers. :thumbsdown:

Yacoub, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this thread is now dumber for having listened to it. I have no instability in three AMD cards over two OS's, two motherboards and multiple Catalyst versions.

And even if I did, I'd take some general instability over a card killer. With instability at least I could sell the card and switch GPU vendors. Then again, I guess if you ended up a dead GeForce due to these drivers, your options just became wide open too. 🙂

No, it's highly opinionated but not insane or idiotic at all... at least what was meant.

A) It's suggested the ATI drivers are less stable in general. Which I agree with besides the early Vista drivers.

B) It's suggested that's the only time nVidia's are instable. Which I disagree with, but is subject to personal experiences.

C) It's suggested that nVidia did pretty good to only fall by taking something the magnitude of a fan failing to run.

It's quite rational thought, nobody is dumber (but thanks for trolling!!), BUT it is not backed up by evidence proving it... so in some ways although unfounded, it's not so different than a lot of other posts where people may or may not have evidence but didn't provide it.

I disagree with the statement as a whole but it is actually possible it is true to an extend someone could rationally hold that as a fair assumption.

... that doesn't make the whole affair stink any less though, WTF is nVidia thinking not putting a driver through even enough QC to catch this kind of problem?

I've been running the 'bad' driver, no video card related issues, my POS Abit motherboard is still causing issues, and now I do have a full blown valid reason to upgrade my PC ... my brother just bought an imac with an i5, cant let my little brother have a better computer 🙂
 
Lets stay on topic ,fact is this thread is supposed to be about the " Nvidia killing driver" not ATI/AMD,personally I'm very surpised Nvidia let this driver slip through their QA,end of the day its/was a serious issue that should not of slipped through period.
