Yes i remember alot of fan boys from the red team saying that nvidia 580 Coulnt out do a 5970. Here it is. Nvidia does it right. Fermi unleashed.

You shouldn't be so quick to shoot your mouth when old AMD drivers/profiles were used not to mention the 5970 being run at the gimped stock speed. Try setting it to run at the same clock speed as the 5870. Or is OCing only allowed for the GTX 460? The GTX 580 appears to be a good card. But it doesn't handely beat the HD 5970 @ stock, a year old card. The GTX 580 is Nvidia's halo card, we still have the 6990 coming out next month.

It will be interesting to see the GTX 580 & HD 6970 going at it. I'm going to bet the 6990 is the top of the line card this gen as well.

Oh lawd. I forgot about those. 6870 and 6850 are in a world of hurt if Nvidia does to them like it just did to the 480>580...

Don't expect the same kind of boost though. We will likely see a 460 type card with all cores enabled at a less conservative clock speed to stack up against the 6870 a bit better, but don't except something to utterly trounce the 6870, or even the over clocked 460s. The 460 is already an exceptional product.

You think NV will release a 570\560 part?....I understand the 580 as it wasnt full fermi, however, am a little lost as to where 570 and 560 parts will fit in!

Stock is stock is stock is stock.

The 5970 is still ahead of the 480, and a good bit ahead when crossfire works properly. All issues we have known about for ages and that will likely never go away with a dual GPU card for ages longer.

But yeah, bring on the 6900s!

570 will be slower, core removed 580 to replace the 480 performance segmant. Id expect the 560 to simply be a GF104 with all of the cores functioning to slide in beside the 6870. Though that would likely reduce the OC potential and it might not even be able to compete with the specialty 460s already.

I would not be sold for sure on a 560 ever, but would not be surprised either.

For the most part I agree with you on this. I give a pass on duel GPU cards from both camps if they have to be downclocked to meet the 300w limit. But they should only be OCd along aside a stock speced card in testing to properly show performance.

GF104 with 384 shaders and less conservative clocks than the gtx460 will beat a gtx470 and hd5870, let alone an hd6870.

For those who say AMD cards cost less to make, not necessarily. A whole heck of a lot more goes into price than die size, which im sure thats what everybody bases this stuff on. In fact, its not even that big a part of the picture. I think estimates put the 5870 at about $10 more to make than the 460, yet the 460 has a bigger die size. Granted these estimates were done by Charile, so might want to add an extra $10 on to be safe :D. So we cant say for sure AMD cards cost less. Thats also a very broad statement. Im willing to bet the 5970 costs more than the GTS 450. Granted, it is logical to assume smaller die=lower cost in that part of things and higher yields, its very wrong to assume the whole card costs less. Secondly, its advantageous to only need one card with Eyefinity vs Surround. Even if you dont think so, it just removes one more complication from the equation. Id rather a monster truck that only needs 1 engine to run, even if 2 seems more logical. Its just one less prerequisite, and just makes things easier. No matter how much you say some games dont make sense with only 1 card.

I have no doubt it would beat a 6870, I do not expect it to decimate it though. Not at the same price point anyway. If the clocks scale as well with the full GF104 it will be a hell of a card that should easily beat the 5870 and 470.

When I say trounce I suppose I mean as far ahead of the 6870 as the 580 is ahead of the 5870. I'd expect more of a leap frog preserving price/performance. Speculative 560 would be as faster than the 6870 as the 6870 is over the 460 stock, costing appropriately more.

Who buys pny cards. just a question.
not my first choice but I have before. they were extremely easy to get in contact with when the 6600 reference cooler fan starting making a racket after 2 years. they answered the phone almost immediately and sent RMA info to my email while talking. it was just over week later I received another 6600 that even came with a factory overclock. I have nothing negative to say about them.

Who buys pny cards. just a question.

Well... they own like 40% of the GeForce high-end market in Mexico, and pretty much anyone who goes to best-buy gets one of these. Newegg always has them in stock, so... it looks like a lot of people. One of the few builders that are actually still loyal to NVIDIA.

I didn't even mention anything but 3+ monitor support. I myself wouldn't need (and don't use) more than two monitors. I was just commenting on the fact (bolded, underlined, italicized for emphasis) that Nvidia has not thrown a penny onto the Eyefinity train tracks yet. I found it pretty odd.

I'm now finding it odd how quick people were to downplay the usefulnesseseses of a competing product's unique features :sneaky:

but I'ma let ya'll finish

Again, like I said, Nvidia has its own "unique" feature in terms of superior 3D support. Nvidia cards can do 3 or more monitors, you just need more than 1 card to do it. We can also talk about PhysX as a unique feature.

I find it a bit odd that you're mentioning *only* 3 monitor support and nothing else. We don't live in a bubble, or some sort of theoretical construct.

If you want to practically run 3 or more monitors in reality, then you either need 2+ gaming cards, a dual GPU card OR a professional video card. Period.

Just like they ran old "gimped" drivers for the GTX 580, what's your point? The 258xx drivers they used in their review don't even officially support the 580. There is no current Nvidia driver that officially supports the 580. The 260xx drivers unofficially support the card supposedly.

Compare apples to apples please. 5970 is a DUAL GPU card. The fact that the 580 single GPU card can match or beat it in several benchmarks is extremely impressive. This is not even mentioning the fact that a 580 will be much cheaper to buy than a 5970.

5970 is currently same price or cheaper on newegg if you count MIR. So it is not much cheaper. Also, running on the newest drivers is just a part of reviews. The 580 has no newer drivers (that I know) so it was run at an acceptable driver. Don't expect massive increases drivers as it is still the same fundamental design as Fermi (but be pleasantly surprised if they do happen).

Still, the 5970 performed = or better, at sameish price and performance. However, this is a card that retailed for 600+ not too long ago, so the 580 is definitely a step in the right direction.

Me. My 460 OC is perfectly fine, and has a true lifetime warranty.

You down on PNY or something?
they use a true lifetime warranty now? they must have changed it because I know at one time it was not like that.

EDIT: according to their website you are wrong...Lifetime replacement warranty does not cover items out of production if the company no longer stocks them. (Lifetime is defined as the lifetime of the product on the market. Outdated technology is not covered by lifetime warranty if the item is no longer available on the common market as a new product.)This warranty is not assignable.

A better question might be:

Why is someone named TecnoReviews who literally just joined the forums, posting links to a site of the same name, and getting away with it?

Please just report the post/poster in question when concerns of self-promotion occur. No need to belabor the point within the thread as that merely serves to derail the thread.

Moderator Idontcare

And we should care because... why?

Because it is against forum policy. Imagine what your forum will look like if every author of every review article out there decides to come here and spam every thread with self-promotion links to their websites and articles.

Moderator Idontcare

I guess "we" don't have to care but the mods will have to. It is drastically against the terms of use.

Its actually for your benefit, not the mods. We are assuming you guys do not want VC&G to become grand-central station for free-advertising spammers to bombard you with links to their articles 24x7.

You guys get the forum you deserve...if you don't care to keep it cleaned up then it will slowly become a mess. Report the posts, make it easier on your volunteer mods to make the best use of their limited free time to keep your forums in the condition you want them to be.

Another topic wrecked.

Well, by now the pictures and speculation about the GTX580 are a bit moot, no? I'm glad to see both companies releasing products at the same time.

Apologies, Idontcare. I had reported it before my post (if you look at the report log, if such a thing exists?) but took a little liberty with my humour.

Yeah, they have a true lifetime warranty on all GTX models, and a 5 year warranty on GTS models. They have also started accepting BFG's RMA's as well. So, if you have a BFG card and need service, they are going to do it.

I was surprised as well to find out their new warranty, but considering it just went in to effect after BFG went under, it seems they are trying to pick up where BFG left off and increase their market share with nVidia.

So far, I am more than pleased with this card. Time will tell of course, but build quality is good. I think the RAM they use is not rated as high as the other manufacurers, and they don't include any overclocking software, but I don't overclock any more...so for me it is no big deal. But, if I want to all I have to do is get Afterburner. But meh. Considering the factory overclock is 765 on the core, I won't really miss those extra 3-4 fps in game play.

Edit:

And no, I am not wrong. I know how to read.

Limited Lifetime Warranty
  • One year (will be extended for the lifetime of the original purchaser upon completion of a registration form on PNY's website)
