The reason for the whole soggy affair is the fact that Nvidia does not like NGOHQ.Com modifying its drivers by planting a new .INF file in them. This adds support for all Nvidia-based cards, unlike the selective .INF files Nvidia has been putting out lately.

He adds: "We are offering drivers and free software; we are not distributing licensed software. Since no law is being violated, NGOHQ.com is fully complaint with the local law. You have no base for you accusations and you can?t threaten us with your own laws. Also, there is no DMCA law in our country. How come million sites are hosting your drivers, and we are the only one to receive legal threats?"

nVidia is being the big bully they are, as usual. nVidia doesn't care about the consumers... it is 100% about profits.

The fact that nVidia makes it so users can not use newer drivers with older cards, even though the drivers fully support those cards, goes to show you how bad of a company nVidia is. They want to force you to go out and buy a new card, by making their drivers not work on your card.

AMD/ATI, are, of course, different. Here is their opinion of what NGOHQ is doing:

"Feel free to distribute and endorse Catalyst software. Just please let your users know that if they use modified drivers we aren't able to support them properly. Keep up the good work in the community." -AMD/ATI

nVidia has never been about making good products, or providing what the consumer wants. nVidia is about taking the industry by force, becuase they want to be able to charge $1000 for a video card. The Way It's Mean to be Played is one of the ways they do this; they started it when their graphics cards sucked (GeForce FX days) so they could make gamers think that their games would run better on nVidia hardware. nVidia continues to use this, throughout the GeForce 6 and 7 days, when once again their products were not as good as ATI's (high-end, at least).

This is just another reason NOT to own an nVidia graphics card. By buying nVidia, you're supporting a company that wants to screw their customers. I know I'm not so proud to own an 8800GTS at this point. People wonder why I don't like nVidia and I support ATI... there are legitimate reasons for that, and this is another to add to my list.

Fill me in a bit me on this if you can. I use GF8 158.27 drivers on my 7950GT now, and they work fine. I do realize that NV have taken out the user clock control and temp monitor from drivers unless you install Ntune and that when you go to NV's site new driver revisions have clearly stop at the 7 series but I can still install 8 series drivers. Is there a threshold where the drivers actually will not work at all? Meaning say ... 3-4 more official driver revisions and the newer official NV drivers will not run on a 6 or 7 series card?

If that's the case then I'm glad NGO have done what they have done, and more people should do the same and it should make heavy press until NV has to change their ways. IMO the drivers should be universal as are ATI's.

i don't "like" Standard Oil, but i use their product

AND i don't think AMD is such a big "loving" green company that puts this planet or their customers "first" ... they have been proven to be just as capable of being "nasty" [as intel, nvidia, MS, etc.] when they believe their interests are threatened

edit: that said, ^, *good* for NGO
i think they win this 'war'
-nvidia folds on this one ... we get to keep the modded drivers
:D
