Nvidia Vs. ATI (yet again)

I'm feeling almost overwhelmed with all the information out there pitting the 1900s and the 7900s. Which really is the better buy?

It seems like performance is comparable. My friend suggested that I go with the nvidia because of overclocking on evgas. I've only ever owned nvidia products, so maybe i'm a little biased.

The posts i've read have pointed out that ati has more power consumption, heat, and noise, but better quality.

Price seems to lean nvidia's way. I'm looking to spend in the $300-ish range.

Obviously there is not going to be a definitive answer, but I'm having a lot of trouble making a decision, as I'm sure a lot of people are.

Buy a Evga 7900GTO now - Use the step up program to get a G80 (8800GTS/GTX) in 3 weeks.

what is the rest of your rig like?

what games do your play?

at what resolution do you game?

how long do you plan to keep your videocard and what is in your rig now?

. . . and yes . . . m21s' "step up" idea can be very good . . . if g80 turns out to be what you want [and it will probably be over $399 by then]

and of course it depends on WHEN you want to buy . . . now?

 
Right now I basically need a whole new system. I've been holding off. I'm still running an athlon XP, and my ti4800 burned out so i get a quick fix nvidia card in the interim cause it will be more than enough when i give this to my parents. I'm looking to buy in approximately one month. I'm going to get a c2d 6400, 2 gigs of ram, haven't decided on a mobo.

I'd like to keep the card for a decent amount of time. Until it becomes necessary to upgrade to DX 10.

Right now my current rig makes gaming difficult, though I plan on investing in batllefield 2, maybe call of duty 2, i'll worry more about that after i've taken care of the hardware.

I've always had an ATI card, as long as I've had an AGP sytem (4 now), and I'm real tired of their poor CS. I read threads by people who complain about bad support by NVidia and their stories are actually better than what I experience with ATI. Still waiting on a response for a ticket placed on 9/24, even filed another ticket to request a response. Very frustrating, I guess the NVidia buyout has produced some bad results in their CS department; they weren't always this way.

the ATi shareholders approved the merger [takeover] yesterday so it shouldn't have much more than a 'moral' effect [the CS dept is probably getting some pink slips] . . .

I've had my 7900gtx for a month now (in a conroe rig) and before that it was a x850xt and before that a 6800nu and before that a 9800pro. Just by coincidence I'm alternating ATI/Nividia going by the best deal available at the time. Before I had the 7900gtx I read all the doom and gloom about the 'shimmering' of the 7900gtx and now I can't see a dam* thing. I did see the Farcry video showing it but unless you look for it you don't see it. All this ATI/Nividia stuff is propagated by the extreme in each camp IMO. I chose the nvidia this time because it is quiet....and it is in fact quiet. Go with whatever you want but if noise is an issue I suppose the nvidia is the wise chose ATM.

the two best price/performance cards in that price range are the x1900xt and 7900gto.

x1900xt

Pros: Faster
Better quality AF

Cons: Loud cooler
Uses more power than the 7900gto

7900gto

Pros: Transparency AA>Adaptive AA
Quieter
Less power usage

Cons: Slower
Lower quality AF

Yep that looks like a killer deal going on right now. If I had known what I know now I probably wouldn't have gone with the x1950xtx I have right now. I don't know why anyone would be buying anything but that card right now with G80 this close. One other thing you could look into is just gettting a full blown 7900gtx or 7950GX2 since you would be switching to the G80 anyway soon why not pay for most of it now, play to your hearts content with either of the highest end cards from Nvidia and then step up to G80 for little money?

Yep that looks like a killer deal going on right now. If I had known what I know now I probably wouldn't have gone with the x1950xtx I have right now. I don't know why anyone would be buying anything but that card right now with G80 this close. I have to agree I got a x1950xtx 3 weeks ago, and then bam the 7900gto hits, I wish I had waited just for the savings and step up, not that I don't like my x1950 its insainly fast, but I also spent 450 vs 250
