nvidia has no interest in making x86 cpu's as you'll see if you have a read of this interview.

No doubt top brass at both intel & amd will be mopping their brows with relief with that knowledge, since I'd like the see the force that would render nvidia "never be able to" do something they set their minds to...

By pushing its Cuda initiative hard into the small but lucrative high performance computing market, the green team hopes to grow its professional business into a $1bn a year operation.

Currently, the business is at $500m a year thanks to its Quadro workstation products, so attempting to double its money in the space of just a couple of years is a pretty ambitious project.

The word on The Street is the term 'GPU Computing', but we wonder if that's an internal Nvidia catchphrase.

Given that the average margin in the Professional business is 60%, and the fact that Nvidia doesn't have to spend too much R&D money on the GPU Computing products (since they'll just be remarketed GeForce products) the earnings potential is lucrative - handy, at a time when the company is facing the bizarrely placed consumer market, with allies enemies and enemies allies. It's amazing what cash in the bank can do for you - just ask 3DFX.

it is not a "video card" at all ... anymore

*you* won't be playing games on it

clever this green team

How can you not play games on it, its just a re marketed geforce?
The only difference will likely be the bios and or driver.

There's nothing clever about it, ATi did the same thing with the x1900, and the "stream" computing project, you could still play games on it.

Same crap, different name.

But oh wait

I forgot your opinion is fact

my opinion is supported by the facts ;)

how do you *know* what the differences will be?
:p

ATi *did* it of course ... but is is Still a x1900 video card ... not optimized and aimed at the FAT pro supercomputing market ... they think "small" ... and *late* and lot's of added "garbage" no gamer will use

nvidia aims for the gamer with the only current high-end card ... AND in June at the pro 'super computing' market
... TWO completely *different* products - based on g80 - and a fat margin for both

AMD could use 500M a year ... instead of their lame "late" excuses that makes them look so bad

next time ... don't forget !

Please enlighten us to what these optimizations are.

Do you really believe they are creating silicon for this?

do you really believe users will be playing video games on them?

Where did you learn to read?

Please point out to me where I ever once said video games.

and *ditto* .. you also said this specialized g80 was a Video card

It's a rebranded video card.

Nothing to see here.

Funny, the laptop I'm posting from has a video card in it, and it has never had a game played on it.

It's okay, your ignorance is not a bad thing. Not admitting you're ignorant is a bad thing.

The best thing you could do would be to stop posting here, and use your time in junior high to learn something.

What the hell is so confusing about this? Nvidia does not need to create a separate processor for this, and I don't think they will either. All they need to do is make the card without display outputs, slap on some special stickers, and bundle along some special drivers along with some software - and there you have a dedicated "math processor" they can sell for 2x as much as a regular 8800gtx. And, yes, AMD did something similar last year with x1900 cards, so Nvidia is just playing catch up in this field.

video card or IG? :p

and i thought you were leaving ... you certainly haven't *added* anything to the discussion other than your ignorantly calling the new G80 brand "just a video card" and trolling ...

clearly you have *no understanding* of this subject whatsoever
