Nvidia talks about 2D quality!

I have owned (3) different GF3 TI200's and ALL had a problem with 2d image quality. They all made my monitor shimmer, mainly noticable on a light background. When I moved over to the Ti4400, the problem went away!

They said they were working on 2D visual quality when the GeForce was first released, they said the same thing when the GF2 was released, and yet again when the GF3 was released.
There were many rumours that it was going to be significicantly improved with the GF2/3 Ti series (though I don't know that nVidia officially stated it that time) and each time I've failed to see significant improvements.

In short, I'll believe it when I see it.
Until then nVidia is saying the same thing they say every 6-8months or so.

To be fair I do believe they have improved since the TNT1/2 days, but even the models with the best 2D visual quality---- usually VisionTek, and formerly Elsa, with Gainward and LeadTek a close second still don't match up to ATi.
And ATi is nothing terribly impressive when compared to Matrox, and what 3dfx used to manage.

Elsas 2D is pretty nice as well, it would be great if nVidia could finally lick the 2D problem thats been doggin' them for so long.

they could do it by simply specifying in the contract that they sell their parts under what sort of filters and capacitors must be used, but they dont.

My gainward ti200 has great 2d quality, even when I have it overclocked to 235/505 and running my display at 1280x960x32@85hz

Suma is the brand you need to look for nvidia cards that have good 2D quality. Suma is a Korean company that specialized in making nvidia card with good screen quality. They do oppersite of all other manufactures by using quality parts and EXTRA filters on their nvidia based cards. Suma cards in general are very good looking too. My GF2 MX comes with black PCB, gold color heatseek with clear fan and gold plated connectors. The card in fact uses 2 PCBs. The main one with the GPU, memory and other stuff. The small PCB with two D15 connectors and the extra filters. Suma claims this help cut down the signal interference. Well, it works like Suma claimed. My GF2 MX card's screen quality is as good as my ATI Radeon cards. I'm a graphic guy and the Suma card is the only nvidia card that that I found is acceptable for me. It could be hard to find Suma cards in the US & they usually cost more but they're well worth the extra $20-$30.

In GF2 terms, Creative (actually MSI) had about the worst 2D out of any of them. VisionTek is good. They are the ones who made cards for Elsa.

ELSA was good, unfortunately they have gone bust

now running an ATI that I got as a gift and am very happy with it.

Nvidia don`t make the cards so I can see why they have this problem,I wonder how ATi would fair if they had 20 companies or so making cards,I bet the 2D quality would not be the same standard.Their 2D quality has improved IMHO but it needs to be tighter between all Nvidia based brands.

Gainward and Leadtek seem to be the top brands now in 2D quality for Nvidia, unless you want to go all the way with the Canopus model.

you got it wrong on the filters. RFI filters are what degrade your quality in 2D. In actuality you want to REMOVE those filters when using a card for Home tTheater use. I frequent AVSfroum a lot (home theater nut). ATI's uses 10 bit DACS while Nvida only uses 8 bit DACS. That difference alone gaurantees that ATI will have better 2D. On most all the video cards I put into my HTPC I remove all the filters from the cards with a little work. Heck, Anandtech even had an article on removing the filters if I remember correctly.

Nvidia also lacks gamma control on their overlay. Thats an absolutely required component of ANY video card that wants to even attempt a run at high end video overlay.

Nvida will continue to lose this battle in 2D until they get gamma control and upgrade the core of the chip to 10 bit. In addition you have to keep in mind that Nvida aims for the gamer. Pure and simple. ATI aims for the media type user. ATI will always have more emphasis on the 2D due to that reason alone.

I don't know what brand this Geforce2 TI200 is (it's some sort of retail-boxed OEM with NO NAME!) but the 2D is about as good as I could ask for! At least as good as an ELSA card I had at one point, and as good as the ATI Rage128pro I had until recently.
I find this sharper than the Radeon VE SDR I had for a very short tie as well.

I once had an ASUS V7100 MX card and it just STANK! Only at 800x600 was it tolerable.... it got sent back VERY fast! :|
Now I have a Trinitron screen so I'm rather fussy about 2D since I'm usually doing some kind of word-processing or browsing.

I got lucky this time.
