NVIDIA system builders have to pay SLI tax

Documents seen by The Inquirer show that if you're a system builder and want to use NVIDIA SLI technology and logo, it's going to cost you, and not just for the cards you buy that you want to integrate into PCs. NVIDIA insists. The terms and conditions may well vary depending on how large a system builder you are, but the document we've seen said that the trademark licence fee is $50 per unit for every unit of an SLI system sold.

the more i learn about SLI, the less i want to get involved... i just hope ATi can get its act together and get some x800s out at a decent price

ATI got the product out the door, it's the sheer fact that they all sold so fast that got online stores selling them so high. ATI can't control those prices. The x850 is supposed to be cheaper and in higher supply when it comes out, supposedly. I got mine for cheaper than x800's were.

nvidia AND ati are officially retarded. my next card is going to be integrated intel 😀

Go with integrated ATI. At least then it'll run the new games.

That a smart move by nividia. console makers do that also, it not only helps revenue but gives a measure of quality control, which would be of paticular importance with SLI. this is obviously a key component to nividia long term stragegy, that could be damage by shoddy workmanship, employed by a system builder cutting corners.

i guess

You people seem to think this isn't standard business practice. This is normal.

Other companies call it a "license fee", but hey, different strokes...

If you want to advertise that you're using Nvidia's technology and use their logo, etc etc and ride that to higher sales, it's going to cost Nvidia more, and you're going to have to make up that bottom line somehow.

Like I said, this is nothing new...

yuo know, when you type volari into google, it assumes you spelled it wrong because of the low number of hits?

anyway, how fast is the fastest xgi card? how does it stay alive if no one buys it?

Did you mean: volare

Christ people.

The logo for SLI hardware has nothing to do with SLI hardware ??

Hmmm....

I think the fee also has to do with what occured with soundstorm, where that tech was hack to bits because the motherboard makers would cut corners and use inferior dacs. and contrary to other asertions these are good things in the long run for everyone. they protech customers because they forced higher standards. they protech companies who use higher standards from being undercut by those who make bad products.
