Ha! I knew it, except I guessed it would be a 1040. You may want to delete that picture as I don't see DisplayPort on there.

EDIT: That is to say that the article speculates on the ports it might come with, implying the the associated image is just a placeholder. It would be odd to see an RX 550 competitor not have the same connectivity (DP) included.

I'd wager half of NVIDIA GP107 (GeForce GTX 1050 Ti): so 384 shaders, 24 TMUs, 16 ROPs, 1.7-1.9 GHz actual boost frequency (Samsung), 1306-1459 GFLOPS, 1 or 2 GB 64-bit 7-GT/s 56 GB/s GDDR5

Half of NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti also is 70 USD, so sort of in-line with AMD Radeon RX 550 pricing, which many consider mis-priced.
 
512SPs is not far enough from the 1050; also 512SPs Pascal is going to be a lot faster than the 550 (512SPs Polaris);
so I'm more inclined to believe in 384SPs

in any case, it's good to see some new smaller GPUs.
 
Of course, will we see any single slot models? Low profile right out the gate?

1030/1040 won't be based on Pascal. It will be Maxwell.
 
If NVIDIA wants to compete with the RX 550 they would have to release something based off the Quadro P600, if not then it will be based off the P400, which would be a really dumb move. If they have a GT 1040 planned as well, then I suppose the P600 will be the GT 1040 and the P400 will be the GT 1030.

The P600 and P400 are out there, how come people don't see that they will have consumer-market counterparts as well?

If 1030/1040 is based on P400/600 which are Pascal then it would be amazing. But knowing nvidia, its unlikely to happen. Be thankful you're gonna get maxwell not Kepler.

If it's still going to be based on Maxwell, then it's a default win for AMD because Maxwell doesn't support HW decode/encode as extensively as Pascal.

Moreover, when the P600 and P400 exists, why not release their consumer variants because otherwise NVIDIA could still fool unsuspecting people by keeping the low-end filled with cards from older generations in the same product stack.

In addition to all the other Pascal goodies, this is my GT 1030 wishlist:

1. Reference/partner designs start and end with low-profile
2. GDDR5 only
3. $70 or less MSRP
4. DVI-I or D-Sub (just because DAC was removed from other Pascal GPUs doesn't mean it can't be added to the PCB)
5. Single slot variant
6. Fanless variant

If this thing is 384 CCs, then it's power consumption and heat dissipation should be incredibly low.

Three times as fast as GT 730 Gddr5 (based on specifications) with 35W TDP.
Price will be $80, so £80 in UK just like RX550 2GB . Used GTX 960 can be had for around that price and 2 times faster or a new 1050 2GB for £100.
Launch in mid May. First Nvidia sub $100 launch since GT 740 in May 2014.

The reason i hear these cards aren't $50-60 is because the cost of making them is not much lower than RX560/GTX1050 hence the profit margins are low enough as it is.
However i would request someone to give me evidence whether this is true or not.

Yeah, it's probably true. Look at the RX460 Designs compared to RX550. Same ram, probably pretty similar pcb and even the coolers are the same size. So the only part where the cost are lower in the RX550 is the pure gpu die. But this is low end so cost are not so high, maybe P12 costs 10$ to make and P11 15$, maybe a bit more, but the difference in the bom of both cards will be probably in the 10$ region. Cheaper designs might use just DDR3/4 instead of GDDR5, that might lower cost more, haven't heard about it with the 550, but Nvidias Low-End the last times was always mixed GDDR5/DDR3.

Some overpaid guy in Nvidia's marketing dept probably said not to use 1040 because it sounds too much like a tax form. It's ok if a model number sounds like a petroleum product, but not a tax form!

But that doesn't help the problem of older PCs that "otherwise work fine", but need:

1. VP9/HEVC decode/encode support
2. DisplayPort or HDMI 2.0 support
3. DX12/Vulkan support for newer emulators
4. Better graphics performance than IGP/APU can provide

I don't care how you slice it, you can't get all that for less than $80 buying a new APU/CPU/Mobo/RAM.

So 64 bit memory bus (like the GK208 used used in the GT 730 GDDR5). I wonder what speed the GDDR5 will be? GT 730 GDDR5 had its memory spec'd at 5 Gbps.....so maybe 7 Gbps for GT 1030?
 
512 cores are unlikely as that will put it very close to the GTX 1050. They can't fit that into 35W TDP; 384 is more likely, similar to the P600.

People seem to forget that these cards have a place where power considerations are very strict. OEM's with custom motherboards and old PC's with Gen 2 ore even Gen 1 PCI-E are what these cards are suited for.

RX 460s even without any extra power connector have trouble running in Core 2 systems, despite having a 75W TDP.

384sp (@ GTX 1050 Ti clockspeed), 64 bit, 2GB GDDR5 @ 7 Gbps, 38W would be exactly half of a GTX 1050 Ti in performance and ~half of the GTX 1050 Ti's 75W TDP.

However, if Nvidia runs 512sp at a lower clock than GTX 1050 Ti then I could imagine the card still making 38W TDP.

P.S. GT730 GDDR5's GK208 384sp core ran slower than either the GT740/GTX 650 GK107 384sp core.

The GT 730 has half the ROPs of the GT 740, and though it ran slower the real world performance gap was not as big as halving the back-end would have you believe.

This card as a single slot low profile will be nice for very small desktop systems that can't handle anything more than that. (Example: Dell Optiplex 790 SFF, Lenovo M58p SFF, etc)

EDIT: Dell Optiplex 790 SFF can handle dual slot low profile.
