hope this isn't a repost

It's half a year late, it takes up a PCI slot, sucks an enormous amount of power, runs extremely hot, and at last report, sounds like a Dustbuster, performs competitively with ATI's six-month-old Radeon 9700 Pro, and is expected to retail for $499 in the US or approximately 650 Euros in the EU. This isn't exactly a winning combination.

Remember when everyone was ragging on the Voodoo 5 6000 for taking up so much space? Well this is worse IMO.

btw, I liked the one where they shoot down the nvidia pixie. 😀

I wouldn't mind losing a PCI slot if it was because it's as powerful as a 3dlabs Wildcat, but otherwise, it's just silly. 🙂

I think you mean AGP slot. Never make fun of how stupid something is and leave yourself open.

Far from funny, it's disappointing. The consumer, me, doesn't get a super fab new part.

pulse8 beat me, but you're still wrong. The gfx takes up an AGP slot like everything else, but it also takes up the adjacent PCI slot.

Half a year late? Uh...
And as for the performance, just wait for drivers actually designed to take advantage of the new core. KTHXWIN.

All AGP cards take but the AGP slot, its just the GeForce FX also takes up the top PCI slot.

It was supposed to be released around the same time as the R9700.

From Anand's review of the GeForce FX:

ATI has not been sitting idle all this time, and progress on the R350 core has been coming along quite well. We proved early on that the 0.15-micron R300 core could reach speeds of up to 400MHz, and with the GeForce FX NVIDIA has established that shipping cards with 800MHz - 1GHz memory is feasible, if ATI can put together a R350 with specs close to what we're implying then even a driver-tweaked FX will not stand a chance. NVIDIA has told us that the GeForce FX will be in stores next month, and we'd expect R350 in about a month following that.

I love my GF4 and want to see Nvidia on top but it looks like they may lose this round.

And the R350 is in mass production, according to The Inquirer, scheduled to release for sale towards the end of march...

But in keeping with Moonbeam's post...I hear that after the debacle that is the FX design, nVIDIA has sworn to make ammends and that the FXII add-in graphics card, which will support AGP 8X, won't take up ANY AGP or PCI slots. 😉

LOL

I don't mind it taking up the PCI slot since it's generally a good idea to leave that one empty anyway. It's the massive noise and cost that I don't dig.

Um, from all I've read, including AnandTech, the GFFX MSRP is going to be $399, not $499.

The GeForce FX 5800 Ultra will retail for $399
