Oh come on. Even intel's IGP qualifies as competent 🙂 All these people are doing something which is entirely mind boggingly hard and deserve a lot of respect.

Competent being used to describe nvidia? they are very good at parting fools with their money, but everything else on the gaming scene has been "meh" at best.

I don't like nvidia's business practices, but there is no doubt that their engineers did a great job with the 980ti and Maxwell in general.

So many pessimist here about price and performance.Do you remember last die shrinks or you remember only last 3 years of PC industry?(all on 28Nm)
If you remember last 15Years none can say such nonsense.I remember last 20yars of PC industry.

Remember when 28nm was new it also cost alot more than 40nm there was also inflation.
Yet GTX670 beat GTX580 flagship by 20% and cost 400USD MSRP.That 100less than 500USD GTX580 last flagship. And it was on brad new super expensive node and with inflation...

If you want some historic lesson about GPU pricing and performance read this.

Did you see what happened to Nvidia sales after 970 fiasco? Not much. Did you see what happened to their sales when they suddenly said Titan was supposedly for singe precision flops, not double precision? Nothing. What happened when Nvidia came out with proprietary solution to what was an industry standard in making wrt display refresh? Nothing much really.

Nvidia is a company which has a user base which loves to pay. I'm not going to say that they're as good as Apple fans, who will buy anything with the logo on it, but it is pretty close. They have been able to successfully sell 680 and now 980, at prices that they have. I doubt that pricing will get better, when there are people willing to throw their wallets at them.

Of-course they were able to successfully sell 680 when it was cheaper and faster than the competing product 7970.

Do you even consumer bro? If you reward certain business practices, what you will get next is more of the same. You set a pattern by paying as much for a x04 chip and now they're continuing with it given they know you will pay for it.

This is a legit post. I buy Nvidia because I like Nvidia, however, I have no issue ripping them apart because of their either shady or incompetent actions as of late regarding product longevity. Its like if you catch your best friend checking out your girlfriend's behind. Yeah its expected to happen once or twice, but if he does that crap too many times then its time to reevaluate your friendship. Either that or just stick to using crappy products or dating ugly girls...However for me, I prefer Nvidia for now.

Read this at like 4:30 in the morning and was dying.

I`m just going to cry in a corner for now after reading all this :| Wouldn`t get enough money for it anyways :|

People don't buy a chip they buy a product with superior performance.

That is precisely correct. The thought of putting AMD hardware in my rig makes my stomach want to jump out of my throat and run down the street.
I never realized how emotionally invested people are in a brand of hardware until this post.

that is a pretty high level. 😱

I simply can't understand it. I don't even get that with real humans let alone a piece of computer parts. 😱

don't worry. consoles would be holding back graphics for all of us. there is no need for an upgrade at all if you game in 1080p. unless you do vsr, but then you have money problems. priorities bro.

True. Whoever comes up with the fastest 14/16nm FinFET single GPU (>8GB VRAM) this year gets my money, and then I'm not upgrading till the next-generation of consoles (2018-2020?).

Nvidia will never loss, AMD is a company that has taken it in the back waffler forever now. They dont know what winning is on cpu or gpu side. Would u let a looser run ur country as ur president? Wait what was this thread about again? Just buy whatever u like i really REALLY couldnt careless what crap u put in ur box and even less what u think about mine.

Even more amazing because the 680 should have been a mid-range chip. I'm guessing NVIDIA will release their mid-range chip again as they are far enough ahead.

Nope, Intel iGPU is still incompetent... they can't defeat by a wide margin against the CraPUS without the help of the edRAM, that once HBM enters integrated, is an automatic Game Over for them again..

PS: Still waiting the moment nVIDIA puts HBM on their ARM chips making their GPU's an absolute monsters

Its better than you think. When I get a new pair of GPU's, the first thing I do (other than shed tears of joy) is to smell the product and bask in all of its glory with all 6 of my senses. The 6th sense is my special ability to sense awesomeness. AMD doesn't stimulate that sense. That's why I only bought 1 AMD card in my life.

Not really. They still have product they need to sell to their AIB channel partners who, in turn, want to be able to sell boards to end customers. Tell people too much about how great your upcoming product is & people -- especially gaming PC buyers who tend to be more informed than the avg. Joe -- will want to wait.

Not this nonsense again. The Osborne Effect is a myth.

ahahah 😀 it's like an addict who is getting a taste of the good stuff. ahaha.

Yeah, not going to buy that.

I have to agree that nVidia doesn't have to do anything at this point and you can't really read much into Pascal's release timeframe yet. Now if they don't publicly demo Pascal at JHH's press conference in April then you can 'worry'.

It matters to the small tech enthusiast minority only.

For the masses, probably because they don't really keep up to date or be informed, so any new tech announcement isn't going to slow down sales of current stuff.

The OEM's love being able to advertise that they have the latest and greatest and they can place huge orders.

Being first to market also gets you first in line with them

Nope, can't tell you how many times my mildly-informed PC gamer friends have actually said things like:

"I hear there's some new chip named Sky..Lark...or is it Sky Lake...coming soon? Do you think I should wait before I build my new system?"

and

"I want to buy a GTX 970 but I hear there's some new chip coming really soon. How soon will it be here? I want to play [insert new AAA title here], but I don't want to buy something that'll be obsolete the minute I buy it."

Believe it or not, even mildly-informed gamers still come across this stuff in their daily internet travels.

Is that why resale price of current about to be obsolete GPUs are still so high? lol really.

Your mildly-informed PC gamer friend isn't the average joe. First, they are your friend and you're very informed.

And finally, tech companies don't experience a sharp decline in the quarters before new products. Imagine Apple/Samsung, each year they release new models, you would imagine it affects their sales in the 2H when the next-gen is coming soon...

Not this nonsense again. The Osborne Effect is a myth.

If you actually read that article, you would see that it actually confirms the Osborne Effect as real, albeit misnamed.

The Osborne company didn't fall prey to the Osborne effect, but the North Star company did.

So the effect is real, it should however have been named the North Star Effect instead.
