Yes, such as in Nvidia sponsored games/features...
Other times, when other vendors/people do it, somehow even Kepler can do it.

Either way, the statement holds:

Don't expect Maxwell to get care when Pascal is released.

You might be right, but I don't keep a card for long so it won't really matter to me. It also appears the mass market doesn't care either. Just the blowhards on meaningless forums care. Perspective is important.

If you feel the mass market is that way that's fine. I don't think the mass market upgrades every single year though.....
A LOT of people upgraded to Maxwell because it was a good buy at the time. Most people I talk to are not upgrading to Pascal, they are holding on to their GTX 970 for 2-3 years.

But yes, at the high end for a Titan X owner, I fully expect most of them to upgrade to the 1080, and then the TitanX/1080Ti.

It's the only way to get acceptable performance at the high end for Nvidia. You have to upgrade ASAP.

Although I find if you don't care that Maxwell will drop off in performance why respond? You don't care right because you're buying Pascal, just as I had originally suggested....

No, I've already said I'm buying the first to market. I don't look at things from a Red/Green perspective. I look at them from a hobby perspective and buy the new stuff when it comes out. I have no emotional attachment to either GPU company. Like every generation that comes out I end up buying multiple cards from both vendors.

Upgrading right away, it doesn't matter it won't effect you...

For those who do stay with Maxwell, it will affect them. Again, this doesn't matter for you since you're instantly upgrading, so why do you care?
Like you said, you upgrade regularly, for those that don't, they do follow how architectures age.
 
I can only buy the big, hot and ridiculous GPU's now. I need something to work those rads I got and low power, low heat, mid range GPU's simply wont give them the workout they deserve. Big, hot and ridiculous so my epic rads can tame them to become cool, fast and ferocious!

Because I don't think it is as important as you are evangelizing it to be. Other than benchmark junkies the difference isn't significant to the average user. Like I said before perspective is important and the average user doesn't perceive any real impact to his gaming. Anyway, I care because I have an opinion just like you do. It happens that our opinions aren't the same. Imagine that.

I think the days of big hot GPUs are going away. I'm not sure we'll see 400w monsters anymore.

So what are you going to do after the 1080 comes out....
It'll be a bit till the next Titan comes out. Are you going to sit on Maxwell?

Weren't people saying Pascal is just Maxwell with FP64? Gotta choose one of the two, either it's a significant change and NVIDIA will try to capitalize on this or else I don't see why Maxwell would suffer much in future titles. Way too early to tell.

I have never ditched my GPU's after only having them a year and I won't start now. By the time I am ready to upgrade, I will have the cash saved to buy everything I want, and then whatever I get from selling my old stuff is just a bonus. GPU's are throw away products. I chose to buy expensive ones this time. That doesn't change the fact that GPU's are expensive garbage the instant you click "add to cart".
I suppose I could sell my 980ti's and use some cash I already have to replace them with 1080ti's, but the timing is bad for me. I am using Sandy-E still and it's IPC age is starting to show. I won't do another GPU upgrade with this chip. These cards are the last this CPU will see, at least with me as its owner.
I will upgrade to a Skylake-E platform and from that point I will upgrade the GPU's. Hopefully big Pascal drops right around the same time as Skylake-E. That would be great. The earliest I will upgrade GPU's will be with big Pascal and they might be timed right and the performance might be around double what I have now, so that would also be just about right for a legit upgrade.

That said. If BF5 lags this year, discard everything I said. I will buy new GPU's ASAP. ok ok, no I won't. But it will be tempting.

Also, I tend to stick to a single game or just a couple good games that I really like. I don't have the time to play all sorts of different games all the time. I get invested in just a couple and stick with them until something else really great displaces them. So, if my rig runs those games prefect, then I usually won't upgrade until a new game demands more power. I would likely still be using my 670's right now if I hadn't upgraded to 1440p/144hz.

Sandy e may live longer with dx12. Especially if pascal actually improves with dx12 instead of modest improvements/regressions with Maxwell.

Hard choice though. Personally I'd sell the 980tis, upgrade to 1070s then move from there. Sell while high! Only will lose 50-100(and I'm leaning closer to low end) most on Nvidia gpus if you sell on time.

Why not Big Polaris? Personally I'm ultra excited for VR otherwise I would ride this 290x for another two years. I'd love to pick up an 8 core Zen for $250 if it lives up to the promises to go along with that Big Polaris or Big Pascal 🙂
 
^Gotta get that G Sync support. I mean I could live without Adaptive Refresh Rates on a high refresh rate monitor, but it does help and I would be hesitant to drop it. At least there is a warm days chance in hell that Nvidia will support Freesync one day, but otherwise the vendor lock is real.
 
I don't like AMD. AMD is the Call of Duty of the hardware world. Same old crap year after year for so long that I just ignore them now. Their image in my mind is completely destroyed. They are synonymous with low performance and disappointment. Its too bad that ATI got sucked into that black hole and their GPU's are now tarnished with the terrible AMD name, but that's what happened and I can't separate the two. AMD GPU's have better longevity lately and if that continues then my mind will probably change, but for now I am not considering Polaris, like not at all actually. Just being honest. It doesn't have to be logical for me really. I just don't like AMD. Would you hang out with someone that you just don't like? Nope, probably not. I won't put something I don't like into my rig.

Add $100-150 to the 1080 and cut the performance on the 1070 by 10-15% and that would make sense. Plus you know they will do something to gimp the 1070. No idea about OC headroom.
 
I'm very skeptical of the BenchLife article. It sounds like guesswork masquerading as fact. In particular, I very much doubt the GP104 card will be dubbed "GTX 1080", and reducing outputs to two DisplayPorts (for the sake of adding one obsolete DVI output) would be a downgrade. DVI is on its way out, why would Nvidia bring it back on a high-end card now?

I still think we're looking at a Sep-Oct. launch for GP104. If Nvidia has some smaller products in the pipeline that they've managed to sneak past Zauba, maybe those will come sooner, but I doubt it.
 
Moon's one of the best posters here for his hyperbole on both sides. Some of his Maxwell driver team quotes completely floor me.

BL is pretty much wrong about 2 DP, Nvidia added 3 DP to every Maxwell reference design card from customer feedback and for G-Sync triple monitor gaming.

Kepler cards were extremely inconvenient having 1 DP only when it comes to G-Sync triple monitor gaming and no way customers want to go through that again.
