Basically saying that maxwell sucks for vr

It actually does. NV have been telling people that since Maxwell's launch on their official blog. But people don't read it or ignore it. NV claims Maxwell cannot achieve the optimal VR experience of sub 20ms motion to photon latency. I did not make this up, this is official stuff from NVIDIA.

Pascal can (fine-grained preemption for functional async timewarp!), so it's massively better for the VR experience.

Here's the analysis of data we have.

Ref card paper boost clock is 1733mhz. Claim observed boost clocks in 3dMark, 1860mhz.

~25% above 980Ti.

55% clock speed advantage vs reference 980Ti that boost to 1.2ghz.

10% less CC.

Think about a 980Ti at 1.5ghz, it will equal a 1080 @ 1860. The 1080 has a real 12% OC headroom based on this presentation.

Overall "IPC" or clock for clock per CC, performance regressed a lot. This I feel is indicative of their uarch evolved to handle graphics <-> compute switch instantly like GCN. Also it supports fine-grained preemption like GCN. There's a regression for adding these features, but in games that use it (heavy compute or VR), Pascal will fly. In many ways, it's much more future-proof.

I really want to see how this handles Quantum Break. I hope the initial flood of gaming benchmarks tests it.

Basically saying that maxwell sucks for vr

It should be 50% faster than TITANX in some games.Remember TITANX is only 25% faster than GTX980.Its around 75% faster in tomb raider and 50-60% faster in witcher3 vs GTX980.

Did they say whether the new VRworks stuff would support Maxwell? Or Pascal only?

The new Pascal uarch makes it the only one from NV that can handle graphics & compute workloads (which VR needs) without tanking performance, so it's safe to say the new VRWorks is Pascal only.

All those Maxwell "VR Ready" systems that people bought... lol, UPGRADE TIME!

I have to give it to JHH & NV, they know how to bank it big time. 🙂
