FYI:

Asus A7V, bios 1007
512MB Crucial PC133 Cas3 Ram
Tbird 1GHz
Gainward Geforce3, Det 23.11 (official, .exe installer from nVidia)
AGP 4x, No Sideband, No Fast Writes, 64MB AGP Apeture
Creative SBlive, installed XP driver patch.
WinXp Home, all available updates from MS.

Installed XP about a week ago (I used to run 98 for games but decided to take the plunge... on an secondary hard drive of course :) ).

I've been running Q3, WolfMP, UT, 3Dmark2001, and Midtown Madness (my daughter loves it) pretty much constantly and have never seen the nv4_disp infinite loop error.

I'm quite happy about that, and so this drive is getting ghosted and never updated...

edit - > I've installed NO VIA 4-in-1 updates.

I've tried EVERYTHING to fix this error, almost nothing helps. I used to have a rock solid system, now I can't even look at the menus in Myth 3.

I've got a BH6 with P3 900+ WinXp + 512mb ram. I'm pretty sick of this "bug" (more like a complete shutdown of everything 3d for me) and I hope somebody figures it out one of these days.

I get this one from time to time. When I up my FSB it happens faster and doesn't have to be in any 3D.
I have an ALI Magik chipset so its not a VIA only issue.
IWILL 333XP-R, 1900+MP 768MBRam (3 sticks PC2700) RAID stripe 3x40

it started to do this when i started to play with CS more..

there is was some problem running CS, so i got the AGP 1.08 update for SIS and reinstalled 23.11 xp driver... now its not even going into normal screen anymore. it just gives black screen after "welcome" and gives that BSOD message..

sigh.... hope there is a fix for it...

I reloaded Win XP with NO VIA drivers, this seemed to help some. The system is definently more stable now, it doesn't crash in windows anymore. I do get a crash every once in awhile while gaming, usually every 4-5 hours.

From what I understand, the newer drivers get's performance boost by aggressively using system memory. If there's any weakness at all with the system or if the rest of the system just can't keep up with it, it bombs out. This is not isolated to VIA chipsets. Of the 3 boxes I've tested on, it has only occurred once and that was with the box using an ECS K7S5A which is based out of a SiS735 chipset. Not sure how nVidia is going to solve this one without backing off on the performance a bit.

1. GeForce 3 + Epox 8K7A+ (AMD 760 + VIA 686b hybrid) = no problems.
2. GeForce 2 GTV + ECS K7S5A (SiS 735) = infinite loop error, doesn't occur all the time, but it does occur.
3. GeForce 2 GTV + Abit KA7-100 (VIA KX133 + VIA 686a) = no problems.

Since the only apparent advantage of using the v23.11 drivers over the v21.83 for me is a higher 3dmark2001 score (everything else is the same), I'm sticking with the older drivers just to be safe.

hi all,
this is my first time ever posting on anadtech forums. :D
just looking around in the forum and found this.
i've also been having this problem.
couldn't believe how many people are having this problem.
here is my current system configuration:

Celeron 1 gig
ECS P6S5AT SiS 635 chipset motherboard
384mb DDR
VisionTek Geforce 2 GTS 32mb DDR

i've noticed that this infinite loop error usually occurs when i play ARC.
it happened once while i was just using IE.
if anyone know how to fix this pleaseeee help!
thanks

There`s no 100% fix at the moment both Microsoft and Nvidia are working on the problem and I have read over at Via Arena forums that there might be a new Nvidia driver out next week that has the fix for the Nvidia loop error(lets hope it`s true),all you can really do is try different Nvidia drivers and few bios adjustments like changing ram speed etc, this has worked for some people.

BTW welcome to AT(Anandtech).

I had this "bug" turned out to be the LogonXP thing that changes the login screen. Man took me a week and tons of drivers to figure that stupid thing out.

I've noticed the BSOD with this error message only occurs when I overclock heavily, otherwise it never appears.

I used to have this problem all the time while playing a Half-Life mod in OpenGL. I say used to because I fixed this g-damned problem! It was a b*tch to finally find a solution.

I tried all the posted solutions. You name it, the via patch, setting my memory timings less agressive, setting my agp video less agressive... nothing worked. Damn this pissed me off!

THIS SOLVED MY INFINITE LOOP PROBLEM WHEN NOTHING ELSE WOULD: Detonator Driver version 23.12

Since installing det 23.12, I have had zero problems!

It was a bit tough finding 23.12, but it's out there and it worked for me, that's all I can say.

I guess I'll have to look for 23.12...

Then again, isn't NVidia supose to release a new offical 27.xx driver soon?

No problems so far, but then again, I'm using an Intel i815 chipset. Does this only occur with the Geforce 3? Or all of the Geforce series?

Mine is a GeForce2 ti, but a few people in the thread mentioned they have a GF3, so it must be a driver set issue.

It also occurs with any recent ATI product. But for some strange reason, my PCI Radeon SDR has / causes / whatever the infinite loop bug, while my new AGP Radeon VE doesn't have any problems.

I've only ever seen it once with an ATi board, and I'm working with ATi/XP systems almost daily so I presume it's not a very frequent occurance with ATi.
