Why all these little bumps along the line? I wish they would focus on faster driver development for current hardware and come out with better GPU architecture instead of ramping clockspeed of current lines. :|

Another card to help drive down prices, hopefully (crosses fingers :)).

I wish they didn't feel the need to have six current-model boards out at any given time...

"Valve" stated they have a fix, so it's not really a problem at this point. It's highly unlikely anyhow that they'd drop MSAA for SSAA; SSAA is entirely too resource draining compared to MSAA.

So im guessing ATI's R360 VPU that is to compete with NV38, is just a overclocked 9800? Just like how the 9800 is a overclocked 9700?

I have no problem with this.
as long as the higher proformance chips are lowered in price point.
it makes sense, release faster products as yields improve.
plus r&d costs for gpu maker is increasingly higher, these slower product cycles just make sense.
ati and nvidia want to make money, not give you the fastest gpu they can for the cheapest price in the shortest time.

using your logic, intel and amd should not release faster cpus, but better optimizations (ie. sse versions/windows) and have only a couple p4's, a couple p3's.
sorry buddy but your comment gets a fail!

Apparently there's no problem at all. At least nothing we haven't already seen in other games anyway.

I thought they did change (optimized) some stuff in the 9800 cores.

I agree, as it seems in theory that you can pull SSAA off completely in drivers on any card(this is how Nvidia added it to the GeForce1/2). That said, I'm not an engineer, so there may very well be some reason why it can't be done.:Q

Something is bugging me about the vidcard market of late. That is this situation of discontinuing current chips and introducing slightly better ones to take their place and original price. What bugs me about it is that Models are not taking a natural progression from Cutting Edge to Budget, rather they only exist until they fall in price by a relatively small amount(still within a certain category, just at the lower end of that category).

For example($CDN): The 9700Pro began as a $600 card, fell to about $450, then was quickly replaced by the 9800Pro which started around $540($CDN has strengthened considerably recently, which may account for the lower intro price). There might be a good reason for this phenomena, such as the possibility that these cards are expensive to produce due to RAM or something else, but for a consumer that doesn't want to spend $500ish yet wants 9700Pro level performance eventually, it seems the wait could be very long.

I dunno, maybe I just got an itching to upgrade my video and am not seeing things clearly. :)

Sorry for veering off topic in previous post, I just don't care much for the next big vidcard, I'm waiting for the bottom to rise. :D

you can still buy 9700's for the price point that is expected.
above the 9600 and below the 9800.
fact is, if you want the speed you have to pay for it.
if 9600 is not enough, pay up or look elsewhere.

Ya, but in the good ol' days( ;) ) the 9700Pro would have slowly but surely continue getting cheaper until it was the Budget card. Those days seem to have passed on somewhere within the last few years.

Hello all.

What is the point of buying a card right now if they keep coming out with better ones. I myself plan on buying a computer for EQ II wich comes out mid Nov, but wont even consider what I want until mid October. But I guess thats they way the computer industry is isnt it.
