Nvidia‘s refusal to cooperate with the Linux platform is costing them way more than bad press; it is also costing them a lot of money. The Chinese government dropped their order of 10 million Nvidia GPUs because the drivers were incompatible with their system architecture. This could easily be solved if Nvidia would just release the source code, but as usual, they refused. The order went to AMD instead.

that's a lot of gpus!

I would be very, very hesitant to release company IP to the Chinese too...

Why? It's not like they are suddenly going to start fabbing competitive knock off gpus.

If the Chinese really want to get hold of your company secrets they are going to do it anyway.

People should read the locked thread and the actual source of the information. Utter bogus article.

Just scanned it trying to ignore all the fanboy rage in it.

What I got was that nvidia were approached for a big contract with the Chinese and couldn't come to an agreement.
AMD were approached and did come to an agreement.

Personally I think it's difficult to ignore the Chinese market. It's massive and they tend to deal in huge monolithic orders.

China is also a massive market for discrete GPUs.
I think their mobile (laptop) discrete attach rate is the highest in the world or something like that.

So what in my little summary earlier do you disagree with?

I disagree that you even can take it serious.

Its a random sensationalism fake article to drag clicks to a crappy website. Just think of it, a CPU research team that ink deals for 10mio GPUs.

Its nothing but a huge flamebait and people easily fall for it. Because all they see is nVidia vs AMD rage. And thats what sites like BSN loves. Hence why the article is filled with the same all over. Linus, middlefinger and much other rage such as stock owners. Oh, and then it also spurs the anti China attitude to drag it political. Perfect! But even then they aso manage to drag Intel into it, again with utter fake information. So now we got everyone involved and raged.

And Theo defending it is a pure win. Basicly he is saying that one of the handful of researchers is leaking information to BSN of all sites.

Ahhh, so you don't think there is any deal at all?

Correct.

Actually I would say I know there aint any. The "CPU research team" do not have anything to do with purchases. Its even a whole other department that handles such things.

But that would require 5 minutes of research for BSN to know. ;)
