Optimistic me: It's a sign that Vega is very competitive
Realistic me: NVIDIA competing with itself

It's NVIDIA making sure it has something to actually sell for $1200. Remember, OG Titan Xp is now pointless with 1080 Ti around so if they want people to spend $$$, they needed to update the Titan Xp.

I don't think it has to do with Vega.

Absolute beast. I have to say NVIDIA's execution with Pascal has been top notch, here's hoping Volta gets a fast roll out next year as well. I only wish it had 24GB VRAM, but that would take away one of GV104's possible advantages (16GB VRAM SKUs according to rumors). :)

Nvidia's execution with Pascal has been outstanding. Along with Nvidia's engineering , TSMC is also one of the primary reasons for delivering an industry leading foundry FINFET process. Apart from Intel who are ahead of everybody nobody can come close to TSMC's process development.

why in the world is it priced at $1200?

Because they can, and because people will buy it.

Also their 100% perfect yields are probably still very low. If the RX Vega is a Titan-Killer they can still lower their prices, and the few people who bought it for this price will feel very stupid.

the sad thing is that is not compatible with Windows XP and Athlon XP

anyway, it makes sense to have a Titan that is actually the fastest card, I suppose it's kind of like the Titan Black, released after the 780.

still, it's very confusing and probably makes some original Titan XPascal owners unhappy

Some us us already called the "Nvidia Titan X" as "Titan XP" to distinguish it from the "GTX Titan X" which is Maxwell. Now what do we call the old Pascal Titan X?? Such a dilemma!! Convene the council at once!

Anyway, I'm sort of surprised to see this since it will inevitably hurt GV104 (GTX 2070 and 2080?) vs GP102 comparisons, if just slightly. But I guess the margins of getting the extreme hardcore to pay another $1200 is worth it more to them. Some of these people might not be able to stand that the 1080 Ti is available to the peasants and is 1% faster or so at max OC, so now they will reign supreme again.

I had my suspicions Nvidia would pull this stunt with the ever so slight cut in the original Titan X GP102. They know how to play the game. I'm a sucker for falling for it.

Question for optimistic you: if this is a sign of competitive Vega, why in the world is it priced at $1200?
The fact that they're even bothering to release it. A full die is harder to manufacture than a cut down one.
