Nvidia IQ- Difference between High Quality vs. Quality?

Technically what are the changes that are made? I get an average between a 10 to 15 drop in fps for games like Far Cry and Half Life 2 when I have High Quality enabled over Quality. Except visually the only thing I notice is more shimmering at a distance with the Quality setting (2xAA, 8xAF 1280x1024). And maybe slightly blurrier textures but that could just be my eyes subjectively looking for something.

I keep it on Quality since I prefer the smoother performance but its definitely got me curious. So whats really going on there thats worth a good 10 fps drop (a big deal during those 40-50 fps heavy shootouts)?

The difference is negligible. I'd rather have the smoother gameplay too. It's a big hit for not a big difference.

The three filtering optimizations are enabled (mip, sample, trilinear).

Is the latter the so called "brilinear" filtering? What type of effects on IQ do these optimizations make exactly? Is there anything besides the shimmering I've noticed?

Yup.

They can add mip transitions and/or shimmering at times. You'll have to experiment and see how you feel about them. I personally don't mind as it gives a nice performance gain.
