NVIDIA interview (with CEO)

I just hope developers start taking full advantage of the hardware ATI and nvidia dish out every year. If you ask me, back from original geforce, a lot of the features those cards boast were not fully utilized, or used at all!

In my humble (and flu-headed) opinion, "photo-realistic" would be a step up from "cinematic-quality". "Cinematic-quality" would stuff like what Pixar puts out, very impressive, but not "photo-realistic".

Too me, I think the exact opposite. Photo-realistic (to me) is the "Nature Scene" from 3DMark2001 SE. Cinematic-quality would be something closer to Doom III which reminds me of the movie Aliens.

If that IS the case...

I am hoping to see both, IN ALL GAMES...

😀

I still think it's all hype on Nvidia's part. Computers run for weeks to render movies such as Toy Story and A Bugs Life (there was an article in MaximumPC a year ago regarding such). There is no way Nvidia is going to be able to do that in a card costing <$400.

It would be nice if Nvidia would give us their definition of cinematic quality.

"Anyone remember the article from Pixar? "

Ya those guys at Pixar are in the dark if they still think it's going to take GPUs (NV or ATI) 20 years to get to the level of a render farm.....Personally I wouldn't put it past 3 years.

"Photo-realistic" and "Cinematic-quality" are totally different IMHO. "

I absolutely agree.

NOX thats what i am still thinking too. The linked they posted is only by Steve Job saying it and its for the Mac. Not a PC. I do not see nvidia saying it for the pc or anyone yet saying it for pc with the GF3 or GF4. So is not at all proof for the pc only the mac with Steve Job saying it which i would of not believed anyway.

Well, since you're "Livin' N'vidia Loca", perhaps you'd believe N'Vidia's own press release, FEBRUARY 22, 2001:

nVidia Geforce 3 Press Release:
Powered by the new NVIDIA nfiniteFX(tm) engine the new GeForce3 GPU enables users to experience a rich, interactive environment. 3D scenes have ambiance with GeForce3 because objects appear photo realistic and custom lighting heightens drama and emotion. Characters and living creatures have organic behavior and unique expressions-their personality emerges. Programmability and performance are the catalysts for this graphics revolution.

Gee (pun intended) isn't that exactly what they are saying about the NV30?

These promises of photo-realistic-cinematic-quality are hardly localized to nVidia...

From the Radeon 8500 press release:

"The game development community will finally be able to create games that closely mirror photo realism"

From the Radeon 9700 press release:

"Beginning with the RADEON 9700, cinematic-quality rendering moves from the off-line software emulation environment into the real time world of the visual processor"

Do I think any of these promises (from either nVidia or ATI) will be realized? Nope. What we have in the interview is the CEO doing his job: talking up the product. It's the same concept with the press releases.

Of course not- certainly not in any practical applications that we can play -i.e. games (certainly not with the Doom III engine). However, we can expect to see really pretty demos from both companies this year.

And Nvidia's current goal is to steal as much thunder (and sales) from the Radeon 9700 as possible by droping hints of the NV30's capabilities. Personally, I am hoping the NV30 is a better card so the 9700 will drop significantly in price.
(and damn, Deus Ex is a great game - nevermind the "older" graphics).

Well, I don't have the link handy, but the quote from the Pixar thing was along the lines of that whatever chip Jen-Hsun was talking about (I already forget) was a "big step toward Pixar-level animation", not that it would be equivalent.

Doom III is not going to be "cinematic quality" OR "photo realistic".

I would also like to see N'vidia's definition of their words "cinematic quality". But we never will, since it is obviously "marketing".

Yep. Having done both photography and film as well as dabbled with high-end 3D rendering stations, I can say without a doubt that "photo-realistic" should be a better than "cinematic". However, having worked for more years in marketing, I can say that it's all hyperbole and that the trendiness of certain words come and go. Photo-realism was a buzzword a few years ago. Even though the products didn't actually have photo-realism, people equate the older tech/quality with that phrase. So now they have to come up with a new phrase.

I'm just waiting for, "The new kinematographic card that really moves you through the action!"
