Nvidia has more input lag than AMD

I'm not sure how this is possible, but it's one of the first things I noticed.

I have a GTX 970 and a 7950 Boost.

When I play Advanced Warfare with VSYNC enabled with the 7950 Boost there is clearly less input lag than with the Nvidia card.

The Nvidia card performs better overall but the input lag is worse, and it is immediately noticeable.

This has nothing to do with COD itself, it's just a game where the issue is easily noticeable due to the quick action and low time-to-kill. The culprit seems to be the display driver.
 
I fixed it!

By setting Max Pre-Rendered frames to 1 in Control Panel for Advanced Warfare. Now it feels just like the AMD card in terms of input lag. They must simply use different default settings.

I noticed it the past few years while playing Skyrim (Bethesda games can have real issues with input lag), but its hit or miss with Nvidia cards I've had experience with. A GTX 670 didn't have it. A GTX 770 did somewhat. An MSI GTX 970 had it terribly, but a Gigabyte GTX 970 ITX didn't. A GTX 780 doesn't at all nor does a GTX 960. The AMD cards I had the past few years didn't (HD 7850, HD 7950 and R9 290). Weird. I will say this, using a framerate limiter like River Tuner Statistics Server and setting it to 58 FPS (60 Hz monitor) totally eliminated it on the Nvidia cards and speed up cursor response on all cards - NV or AMD.

I've set it to 1 in the global profile, hate latency.

something that might also help in nvidia control panel:
adjust desktop size and position->scaling to no scaling, perform scaling on display.
 
Isn't there a setting you can change to influence input lag? Prerendered frames was it called iirc. Maybe AMD and NV just have different default values for that.
 
Two observations:

1. Don't confuse DPC latency with input lag. DPC latency is what causes audio to pop. It is measured in microseconds, so you can't really feel it in game.

2. In addition to the max prerendered frames setting of 1, some people believe that setting scaling mode to No Scaling and setting Perform Scaling on: Display in the control panel also reduces latency up to a frame. Of course, turning vsync off results in less input lag, with the obvious side effect of tearing.
 
In most games you can also change the pre rendered frames in a cfg file, in the battlefield games it's something with renderaheadlimit or something. I once set it to 8 in the game and nvidia control panel, and turned on vsync, was pretty awful.
 
My computer, DPC is higher on win8 than 7.
In demanding games, I set my settings to high performance in the power options. This makes a difference on this Xeon because leaving it n balance will typically have the CPU clock speeds all over the place, while playing games!!
On balance, Its often downclocked and only jumps up to 4.4ghz for tiny burst then back down to 3ghz speeds. It is crazy. Putting power options to high performance has my CPU running 4.2 to 4.4ghz, no dramatic downclocks.

Many games I just leave it as it is, in balance. But on games where performance is needed or demanding titles, the CPU doesn't need to be running at half its speed.
If you overclock without speedstep or at a fixed clock speed, then it shouldn't matter. But not everyone overclocks and some people leave power savings features on when they overclock. Any downclocking is bad when you really need the performance. Wn 8, you can get to power options with two clocks. Since i leave my PC on 24/7, it is important for me to have power savings when I need it and high performance mode when I don't.

Is anyone getting similar input lag issues in GTA V? I can't tell if its because of the console-first nature of the control scheme to smooth mouse/keyboard motion or if its a true input lag issue. Using R9 290, 5760x1080p @ medium settings (~45 fps), Win 7, 2500k @4.5, 16GB DDR3 1600. Could just be lower FPS than I'm used to
