Does anybody know if the day the new cards come on the market, that reviews will start showing up on websites like this. I need parts right away, but I want to hold off for any reviews.
Reviews should be out on Monday (June 16). GTX 280 will be available on June 17th, and supposedly GTX 260 won't be available until June 26th.

The GTX 280 beats the 9800GX2 in Crysis, HL2: Episode 1, and World in Conflict; the 9800GX2 beats the GTX 280 in 3D Mark 06 and Company of Heroes.

where did that PC Gamer article come from? It took them 3 months after the 9800GX2 was out to come up with a reveiw...and they somehow found that it lost to the HD3870X2 in all of their benchmarks but one
I can't imagine they would have a GTX280 reveiw this quickly.

It looks like a legit review, if so it seems like the GTX 280 will be a fast but expensive piece of hardware.

Probably a typo; likely all those tests are run at 1920x1200, not 1600x1200. Nobody would bench 1600x1200 on a widescreen monitor.
It is indeed fast and impressive compared to the single-GPU 8800 series, but not quite as impressive vs. the 9800 GX2 IMO. It's still faster and a much better card overall, especially in high res + AA/AF, but the performance increase is nothing like G71 -> G80 (as the reviewer seems to think).
That is not at all surprising IMO; It is a hard feat to beat 2 GPUs of the same architecture with a single GPU on the same fab process. 7950 GX2 -> 8800GTX was another story, two completely different architectures.
At $649, the GTX 280 is just way overpriced IMO - $499 would be an acceptable price, and perhaps the cards will fall to that price soon. At $649 though, the card's performance does not justify the cost. HD 4870 Crossfire should be around that price, and there will be no comparison in performance from what I see. Anyone who buys the GTX 280 for $649 is, IMO at least, foolish. Unless you have unlimited cash or are going SLI/Tri-SLI, but very few people meet that criteria.
The GTX 260 is priced much, much more competitively at $399, but you can still do better for that price IMO. If you have a CF motherboard, HD 4850 Crossfire will perform closely to the GTX 280 for the same price as the 260 model. And if you have an SLI motherboard, 8800GTS 512MB SLI will likely outperform the 260 as well.
If you ask me nVidia is a victim of its own success in a way with the GT200 launch. Had G92 never happened, the prices would make sense and so would the performance. But with cards like the 8800GT at $150 or less, the 9600GT at $130 or less, the 8800GTS 512MB at $200 or less.... it becomes hard to justify spending $400 or certainly $649 on a card. AMD's HD 4000 series also makes the prices look rediculous. You can get a good 60-70% of the performance of a GTX 280 for 46% the price by buying an HD 4870. And the power requirements are much lower. Comparing the 4870 to the GTX 260, I wouldn't be surprised if you got 80% of the performance for $100 less.

How damn hard is it for those stupid ass companies to understand that I don't a jet engine wasting 70watts, making noise, and heating up my room for the 10 hours a day I use the computer for NON gaming reasons...
Turning off the video card is the most sensible thing ever conceived in the video card industry... and yet AMD can't do it AT ALL... and nvidia requires that you use a specific AMD mobo (no intel? no thanks!) and only supports it on 9800GTX and above...
This is beyond ridiculous

I understand why some people might want it, but I could care less about Hybrid Power. Especially since the GTX 280 supposedly uses ~25W in idle. That's nothing to be concerned about.
I really don't care about power consumption for GPUs at all.... obviously there are limits, but power is the least of my worries when selecting a GPU.
Video cards don't make a ton of noise when idling...even under load my 8800GTS 512MB is never noticeable while gaming.

Wherever they come from... If they are valid, the results are interesting, but not terribly conclusive. In WiC, CoJ, and test 2 of Lost Planet the 4800s card do really well compared to the GTX 200s, Crossfired Radeons would most likely destroy the GTXes. In test 1 of Lost Planet the GTXes pretty much double the performance of the Radeons though, Crossfire would have scale pretty much 100% just to catch up.

25 watt in idle? I'll beleive that when I see it.. also, the GTX 280 will have hybrid power. And will cost 650$... I wonder how much the 4870 will take. or the x2.
Ofcourse it is not noticeable when gaming, you have explosions and music blasting out of your speakers... I am talking about idling noise. I am here surfing the forums and I can hear the fan on my video card, this should not be the case!
I dont see it as a problem. My setup sounds like a jet engine when im gaming, because my GPU fan is at 80%, because I OC the heck out of my card. When Im not gaming, EVGA precision tuner allows a quick hotkey to lower fans to 30% or lower, and you can barely hear it.
What video card do you have?
nVidia 8800 series cards are absolutely silent in idle in my experience. Stock fan speed is ~30%, and 30% on my 8800GTS 512MB produces no noticeable noise.
That is how they did it with the 9800GX2/9800GTX/HD3870X2 comparison review...I questioned Logan Decker about that entire article and the fact that he said the HD3870X2 beat the 9800GX2 by a large margin in many games.
Actually, it doesn't look like an oversight, but rather an error. He states in the body of the article that that the GTX 280 got 34 frames per second at 1920X1200, but in the benchmark results it lists the GTX 280 getting 34 Fps at 1600X1200. It is unlikely that it performs exactly the same at both resolutions, and seems quite possible that he misquoted the benchmark in the body of the article.

I could not care a damn about 3DMark anything because it doesn't prove anything and hardly ever compares to real performance.

I have always been bashing 3dmark.. but now that i think about it... it is bashed because running a canned demo shows the GPU matters a lot more compared to the CPU compared to what it is showed to matter in 3dmark. But actual playing is always significantly worse FPS then a canned demo, and a better CPU has shown tremendous improvements in my own testing.
So maybe there IS Something to the 3dmark tests....
Anyways, it is still just one test, a heavily optimized for in drivers one. I want to see a variety of tests: WIC, Crysis, UT3, etc etc etc.
And I use an 8800GTS 512. In fact I FRIED two of them before I started INCREASING the fan speed.

I never care about 3dmark, specially the new vantage it's a terrible program

If those numbers are true, GTX 280 is a major disappointment, esp concerning the price tag. Bring it down 300 euros (!), then we talk.
