The 9600 isn't the same as the 9600 Pro.
the thg article compared compared the 5700u and 9600p... so where i referenced "9600's", i was referencing "9600pro". my bad for not clarifying...
Goddammit, I wrote it wrong again. Here it is:<snip>
hehe... ?
I happen to think that the ATI colors are more natural looking.
well, like i said, subjective.. to each his own :)
All some people know is Nvidia. I at least offer the choice
well, they manage to find there way to AT forums and register.. i don't think they're so clueless that they've never heard of ATI - they're a bit more well known than say... anandtech :p if they wanted further info on ati, i am sure they would ask, as many do. just read the first page of titles in the video forum

Ah but when ATI had very bad drivers during the days of the Rage, certainly they couldn't have improved things since then, it isn't like their hardware has gotten any faster
The Rage Fury was a very nice card, and the MAXX roxored my boxorz. Both good stuff, definitely top tier. The MAXX was especially cool, I'd give my left nut for a 9800Pro Maxx.

BTW- check it out BFG- still think I'll be hurting when DaPunisher's 5800U arrives?
Digit Life has the Ultra on top at UT2003 AA/AF
Not too shabby, I'm thinking my 9700Pro was pretty good, and my 9800 Pro not much better.

# Almost the best 3D performance among accelerators available on the market;
# High build quality;
I know you like your Digit Life, or is it XBit?

Nah, AFR had a raft of problems. If you really must go multi-chip then 3dfx's SLI is a much better solution.

i always run 4xaa on both products, so i won't argue there.. however 4x is rather standard in all the benchies also.
I see a minor improvement in ATI going from 2x to 4x, so I could see how Nvidia's 4x would look similar to ATI's 4x.

hehe... ?
Sometimes I think quicker than I type so I might miss some letters or articles.

I seen at least one person that has heard or both but doesn't know anything and defaults to Nvidia.

I hate threads like this. People keep asking the same questions over and over again. just look at some benchmarks and decide.

I like threads like this, it lets everyone get out their equipment and measure to see who's got the biggest hardware. DEFINITELY a valuable use of AT's forum DB resources. :p

My 5800Ultra will be here in a couple days, I'll definitely have the biggest hardware. Jimmy Dean even wrote a song about it in the 60s:

Ev'ry mornin' at the den you could hear him arrive
He is the original nV30, not the crap thirty five
Kinda broad at the shoulder and narrow at the hip
And everybody knew ya didn't give no lip to Big nV.
(Big nV, Big nV) Big Bad nV (Big nV)

Errrr....yeah.

5800 Ultra is pretty powerful. I still think it's weird that they released the 5900 so soon, when the 5800 still rocks.

I don't know about the biggest, but if it's a FlowFX model, you'll definitely have te loudest hardware. :p

Oh yeah, too loud and too hot.

The reference design was... the acutal release cards were much quieter... as for heat... The FX5900 series puts out just as much heat, as does the R9800 series.

I believe Acanthus is right, in Kyle's update of his 5800 U review, he said the fan didn't spin at all in 2d, making it silent there. He said the release versions of the card were 5db quieter than the boards reviewers originally got, which was about half of the difference in fan noise I think? (I seem to remember 66db 9700Pro and 77db on original 5800U?)
I could be wrong on this, but am amped to stick that bad boy on top of my K8T Neo.

It's overpriced for what it is, and basically would have been about the same as my 9800Pro. I'll get a nV40 or R420 to "upgrade".

I don't see then, why they released the 5900. Maybe too expensive?

I own both as well, keep the 5950, myself, I like everything about the 5950 better.

Well....
1. The 5800U was costly to produce, yields of 500MHz chips were low, it was still a lot louder than a 9700Pro
2. The 5900 was a refresh that was planned at that time anyway, the 5800s were late due to TSMC
3. The 5900s are cheaper to produce, and an overall better product
4. The 5800s got a lot of bad press, largely due to bad drivers at release and the loud fan

Rollo, I know you don't mean to sound biased, but the term loud fan scarcely describes the FlowFX solution. Granted, some people like that sort of thing, which is why there was a market for an aftermarket counterpart for the Radeons, but as a stock cooling solution, FlowFX didn't say ANYTHING good about the underlying chips, and it still took up two slots.

Purely for performance reasons, the 5800u wasnt as fast as the 9700p/9800/9800p with AA, and they needed 256bit memory to close the gap.

Edit: and as rollo said, it was late and the refresh chip was due anyway.
