I Already have both these cards so Cost is not an issue. What card do you think i should keep ...the 1 i get rid of is going into a comp at work, That will never be used for playing games but will use some AutoDesk Viz ( 3Dmax ) and CAD programs.

But i don?t care about work and what card goes into that system is irrelevant just want to make sure I?m left with the best choice for gaming and yes i plan to play games now and in the future. so your advice is ???

5950

the ati fanboys will claim the 9700 is faster....but some of them are so crazy they would rather have a radeon 7000 over a 5950....

You can't tell by using them? What about the 9800pro extreme in your sig? You're going to pick one of the 2 cards you're not using? What about the 5900nu you were fretting about last month? Wasn't the 9700 at work then?

I agree with Rv. I think this guy is full of crap and is trying to start another flame thread.

In any regards, start using the muscles in your head videoclone.

The cards you are suggesting are Gaming Cards.

Ever heard of Nvidia Quadro.

Get the Quadro FX.

Edited For Truth: In gaming, the 9700 Pro would be just as fast and at a nicer price.

If you own both cards already, why are you asking us? Whichever one you find performs better in the games you play.

Keep the 9700 Pro, it will absolutely demolish the nvidia card when AA and AF are applied.

If you have both cards then the best option is to try both and see which one you like better.

the ati fanboys will claim the 9700 is faster....but some of them are so crazy they would rather have a radeon 7000 over a 5950....
And in response nVidia fanboys will post benchmarks @ 1024 x 768 with 0xAA and 0xAF to proclaim its superiority.

The 9700 Pro might not be faster than the 5950 but crank up both cards to their maximum AF and AA and use a decent resolution like 1600 x 1200 and the gap will be much smaller than you think, not to mention that the 9700 Pro will have better image quality and it also doesn't cheat.

I'd kept the 5950... most gamers at least don't care what the image looks like. Most of the time you can only tell the difference if you zoom in 400%. All gamers want is high FPS to match the high Refresh Rate of their monitor. At 1600x1200 games are unplayable to me because the FPS is so horrible...

This makes saying at 1600x1200 with max AF and AA the 9700 Pro is better is totally useless... this is coming from an ATi owner, go with the 5950.

My first impulse was to recommend keeping the 5950U for games, but after reading XbitLabs' latest 3D roundup, I'm inclined to recommend the 9700P. A 9700P should be 10-15% slower than a 9800P, and the 9800P in that review is generally even or 10% faster than the 5950U--so the 9700P ends up only slightly slower than the 5950U overall. But when you look at the 9800P's huge performance advantage in the first three tests (all DX9--the 9600XT is as fast as the 5950U!), I'd be inclined to recommend the 9700P, as it seems it will be noticably faster than the 5950U in newer games.

It's a closer call than I thought it would be. If you won't be playing those DX9 games (or will upgrade by that time) and the games you play tend to favor the 5950U (Bioware games, maybe Call of Duty and its extra high res textures, or much older games where nV's 4xS SSAA may be helpful), then go with nVidia. I'm not sure I'd recommend the 5950U for 16x12 wAA+AF, as I don't think it's fast enough at that extreme setting (20-30fps in the XbitLabs article).

maybe true...but i'd personally like to see a direct comparison between the 5950 and 9700 rather than examining the relationship once removed. i'm looking, will post a link if i find something

THG

Digit-Life
(No 9700Pro, but in EVERY test I've ever seen, that card performs within 1-2% of the 9800 Non-Pro at stock, so use those numbers)

While the 5950U is a bitchin' card in terms of raw performance, it costs WAY too much compared with something like a 9800Pro (which is only a little bit slower than it, and can often keep up or beat it with AA/AF enabled, as can be seen in the above benchmarks). You can observe it at the BOTTOM of the THG price/performance chart for AA/AF cards (the 9700Pro is ranked sixth, losing only to the R9700NP, FX5200, R9600P, R9600XT, and R9800NP), and it's low on the Digit-Life price/performance ratings as well (the 9800 is near the top on all of them).

Keep the 5950...Doom 3 is just around the corner. Then may upgrade when HL2 comes around...the 9800/9700 class cards will be cheap then...assuming that they're suitable for HL2. You probably won't even need to...my 4200 seemed to like HL2 alright (dont ask me how), and Valve supports everything under the sun, so I'll bet they make the performance better on Nv cards.

I second nick, show me, or could I also make unfounded claims, such as a magical rock keeps tigers away ;) You gotta prove it, "just because" isn't exactly a very good reason if ya know what i mean.
