NVIDIA GeForce FX 5800 & 5800 Ultra ($399/$499), 500MHz clock

Was that from info at Comdex or from something else? It'll be more interesting when we start seeing technology demos and more concrete specs...
It'll also be interesting to hear what's going on in the lower end of the market.

The GeForce FX will outclip rival ATI Technologies' Radeon 9700--the fastest graphics chip available now--by 25 percent to 50 percent in speed

I believe it when I see it...

The GeForce FX will outclip rival ATI Technologies' Radeon 9700--the fastest graphics chip available now--by 25 percent to 50 percent in speed. But the Radeon chip, unveiled last July, won the favor of many PC makers and gamers, while the GeForce FX, which had been expected as soon as August was held back. Some analysts have said it will be hard for Nvidia to take back that business.
25% to 50% faster than the Radeon, love and hate how new cards are getting faster and faster than ever before when compared to older cards.

when will the release date be? (when can I possibly buy one, though I wont)

and also, when does the NdA expire?

Okay, so I ask again: 25-50% faster for 2x the cost of a R9700 PRO, especially with ATi's answer to NV30 not too far off after it becomes widely available?

BTW, where is that preview Evan was talking about???

Regardless of when it comes out, it's probably going to be similar the Parhelia "technology preview" which wasn't particularly interesting.

How impressive can their tech be if it has to be clocked at 500mhz just to be 30% (average) faster? Once again they have to use brute force not finesse.

I'll take it however I get it. 🙂 Brute force or finesse, as long as it plays games fast and pretty I am happy.

Why should it matter if they use brute force?? Speed is speed!!

The fastest GeForce FX will be 50% faster than the 9700 Pro with a 54% higher clock (500 vs 325). 50% speed increase on a 54% clock increase, hardly brute force if you ask me.

Better luck next time 😀

NFS4 will be eating his words when ATi releases their Catalyst 2.4s later this week! The drivers will unlock the hidden potential of R300 and give ATi the performance crown over NV30!!! Mark my words...

Yeah, when Hell freezes over 😛

50 percent is how much faster it is at its best. not at everything. they had almost won me back untill i saw the price tag. i refuse to buy when they try to raise the price bracket. no way in hell is nvidia getting my money at those prices. ati brought a card that was just a much if not more of a leap over the ti 4600 but were good enough not to try some sh it like this. thats it, i am writing a letter, o wait, i just did.

"50% speed increase on a 54% clock increase, hardly brute force if you ask me."

The article didn't say 50%, it said 25% to 50%. Even then, I think most of us are going to take a wait and see attitude on that one as we hear these claims from everyone all the time and they rarely are true except in obscure situations (only in the pixel shader 1.4 bm in 3Dmark or something worthless like that).

ATI's price list. That should settle any debate on price. We'll have to see what street prices are on the new Nvidia card. Show me a benchmark where the 9700 consistently beats the GF4 x2. Nvidia claims 4x the performance of the GF4 which will mean it can certainly beat it by 2 fold. That's not the same leap as a 9700. (Unless Nvidia would be so cheap as to be comparing it to a GF4MX, in which case, well we'll have to see.)

I just love when ATi fanboys pull this kind of crap. Of course it's impossible to believe that the new nvidia part will beat the current ati part. They were quite convinced that the Radeon would beat the GF2Ultra, the 8500 would beat the GF3Ti500, and the R300 would beat the GF4Ti4600. They were right on one of those.

The chip can render graphics as much as four times faster than Nvidia's current GeForce4 Ti 4600 processor.

Your fanboyism is showing again and it's far from attractive. I'll stick to the 30% figure without FSAA or Aniso with those the figure will be much smaller I wager. We have seen no benches so don't open your mouth too quickly.
Again brute force just to have a product that appears to be a little bit faster than a 9700 clocked at 325. Of course I will buy one and whatever is faster will stay in the mainbox and the slower will get relegated to the 2nd system where the 4600 is now.

Thanks for pointing that out. I didn't read the article again before I posted so I thought I'd add the MX part just in case. So now show me where a 9700 leaps even close to this.

That CNNmoney article also says,

The GeForce FX represents the largest financial investment in any chip nVidia (NVDA: Research, Estimates) has released. It's also the first chip to combine the efforts of nVidia and former employees of 3dfx. (3dfx was once the king of the graphics hill, but was surpassed -- and eventually bought -- by nVidia.)

"The engineering teams sat down and did side-by-side comparisons of the best of what we had and the best of what they had and rolled it all into one killer chip," said Rehbock.

But the chip faces strong competition from ATI's Radeon 9700. Because the GeForce FX was delayed by several months, the ATI (ATYT: Research, Estimates) chip (introduced in July) stole the spotlight. Cards using the Radeon 9700 hit store shelves in August. Analysts, in turn, lowered their recommendations on nVidia and the stock slipped.

Cool!
