Alright this is just freaking weird... everytime I go to install nvidia's forceware drivers for my graphics card it just cuts out when it hits C:\WINDOWS\system32\help I get this random black screen with grey blocks all across it. Any idea's ?

I have tried
Using different driver verisions(Uninstalling and Reinstalling after reboot)
Updating BIOS / Chipset
Formatted the HDD twice
I even tried tweaking with the bios a few times.

Just keep getting the same result time and time again, save me from slowness pls.

Running:

Asus A8V
BFG 6800 OC (AGP 8x)
1 GB OCz PC 3200 DDR
200 GB Maxtor IDE/133 HDD
Win XP Pro SP2

It just doesn't make any sense!

What drivers can I install for my video card other than the ones offered by nVidia ? If your going to reply to a post at least try to be helpfull thanks.

Did you uninstall any previously installed Forceware/nVidia drivers before trying to install your new one? If not, do that, first, and boot up to the native Windows nVidia driver. Then, install your new driver. Also, get offline so you can safely disable your AV and firewall.

I don't know if XP still requires running a separate cleaner ap like Detonator Destroyer to remove any leftover traces of old drivers, but you may want to post your question in the Video forum to see if others have had similar problems. Also, check sites like guru3d.com to see if they have any info.

Yeah, I did a clean format several times... ensured the bios / chipset was up to date and still no luck!

I did not try the detonator destroyer but if this happens after a clean format I have a funny feeling it will continue to happen after removing leftover traces of the old driver (which yes XP does require cuz it blows)

I would simply use Linux but I have way too much Windows based software (IE: Games).

Thanks though I reposted in the video section and I will try guru3d.com. I also even posted on nVidia's site see if they have any idea's.

thx again

What version are you trying to install? You can try searching on Google for the driver version + forceware or nVidia to see if anyone else reports problems. On guru3d, one good indicator of which versions work is the number of downloads they show for each version. You'll see some are a lot more popular than others.

If you're having that problem over a clean Windows installation, I can think of two possiblities:

1. Your copy of the driver is defective, or it's the wrong version for your OS.

2. You may need a BIOS update. Check Asus' site to see if any later version addresses your problem.

Did you have a similar problem when you tried to install the driver that came with the card?

my bad, I confused what you were talking about with the internal firewall app that was included with NVIDIA chipsets.

Do you have DX9 installed? I may not be remembering correctly, but seems to me that needs to be in there b4 the gfx card drivers will install

All of the above actually, No new BIOS updates for my board and no mention of this issue on ASUS's website. I have tried 6x.xx 8x.xx and 9x.xx all with same results. It can't be the driver something else has to be wrong.

Now, I'm just grasping at straws, but just checking -- Did you have your motherboard drivers installed before you tried to install the vid driver?
