Newsflash guys: Your computer's performance doesn't automatically change because there's a faster card out there. If your card plays your games fine now, it'll still play those same games fine even when there's a better card out there lol.

It cracks me up that some people think just because there's a faster card out there it somehow impacts their computer's performance.

http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=40128Nvidia slashes 8800 Ultra price

The price has now been slashed by around 80-90 US dollars wholesale, so the 8800 Ultra is now going to slowly squeeze the 8800GTX out from the 549-599 dollar range and effectively start to push the 8800GTX downwards.

This is putting additional pressure on AMD as well, with the hyper-clocked GDDR-4 version of R600. Even though we heard on several occasions from DAAMIT that the product has been cancelled, partners are preparing the card for the market. From our talks with partners and game developers, we learned that 512MB is abysmal amount of memory for today's world of FullHD and XHD resolutions.

So it seems the 1GB version is required for the ATI R600[/quote]

Cool, i hope in turn the 640MB GTS drops, but that quote sounds like Inquirer or FUDzilla so I'm a bit hesitant to believe it. =/

GTS SLI is almost looking reasonable if there isn't anything new coming out until November.

I think he (Cheex) was worried about his purchase. His money was well spent if he puts that card to good use. As always, a better deal will show up... eventually... so enjoy the best that your money can buy RIGHT NOW! :D

So it's a 1-year cycle? New/high-end in fall, and mid/low-range or whatever's needed for competetion in.. the rest of the year? Could you give us a link to G92?

Anyways, that's what I expected, and it follows the pattern of previous Nvidia product releases.
Well certainly I wouldn't expect any of the chip makers (AMD/Intel/NV) will launch brand-new design every year. They will have to recoup the R&D and then some. (well, more like milking as long/much as possible) But die shrink / speed bump / efficiency tweaks at high-end used to occur every 6 months in the past. (although in many cases as a form of paper launch)

That looks to be becoming every 12 months, and that's what I don't like about.. and we know why that's happening. :(

In light of what has happened if we had purchased the 8800 GTX back in November 06 it would've been extremely future proof.

However I was expecting the R600 to come in January and demolish the 8800 GTX so I held back and got a GTS instead. Sadly that didn't happen.

The GTS isn't a bad card but I'd rather have been gaming on a GTX for these past six months.

Yes the new nVIDIA's way of approach is new high end part during fall, new mid/low end part for spring.

Its almost sure that nVIDIA has skipped 80nm all together for the high end. So basically they are moving to 65nm with the introduction of G92 (or G9x). This will be something along the lines of NV40 to G70.

When they move to 65nm it gives them a chance to do even more serious tweaks to the existing G80 while adding new features in since its not an optical shrink. Theres quite a bit of rumour going around on this beast. Some are suggesting nVIDIA might have moved down back to 256bit bus (reduces die size dramatically while maintaining bandwidth using high speed GDDR4), shader core could be hitting the 1800mhz barrier with 192SP which results in a very close number to the 1TFLop number. I wouldn't surprised if the ALUs in the G92 were more powerful (Dual MADD instead of MADD/MUL).

Theres quite abit of speculation going on based on this GPU since not much is concrete except that its based on G80 but will be much more powerful.

Note - new high end as in new generation (refresh or complete overhaul). Derivatives of the high end e.g ultra version/GT/GTS/GS etc could still be possible depending on competition and other factors.

@ yacoub: That is definitely not my line of thinking. As you can see from my sig, my rig only lacks better and more memory, which I am in the process of saving for (Crucial Ballistix Tracer).

@ betasub: So far I am enjoying it...I just wish that I had a lot more money to get all the ultra high-end stuff in not only video cards but in all section of my rig.

After all, who am I kidding...Any 8800 is high-end!!.....:D

Hmm. Im pretty ready to upgrade. Im wayyyy past the usual upgrade timeframe. But Im going to Australia tomorrow for a while.. maybe when I get back, the refresh will be closer to being out, and the drivers for the 2900's will be better. The way its looking right now, its going to be the refresh, or at least a 8800GTX for me down the road.
