Nvidia Drivers wont install

While trying to do a clean install of Nvidias latest drivers 340.52 I got an error that the driver install had failed.

Restoring the system to an earlier restore point did not work. I get the same error with all of the archived drivers now. Windows update does not work either, but it keeps telling me that I need to install the nvidia vga adapter drivers. Device manager is not even showing a display adapter at all anymore.

This seems to be a fairly common situation, not just this driver, and there are all sorts of fixes floating around other forums. I've tried manually uninstalling all drivers, I've used DDU, I've started in safe mode, I've saved a drive load log that doesn't show any nvidia drivers loading, and I've tried this (hairbrained) solution "http://geekdrop.com/content/solved-nvidia-drivers-wont-install".

So far nothing has worked. This forum is the one that has consistently provided working advice. Otherwise I am going to try physically removing and re-installing the card (MSI 650ti boost), and doing a clean windows install (hate).

Thanks for your thoughts.

Hello pashbe1,

Sorry you haven't seen a response yet. First off, I think I am going to need to the specifics of your computer (make and model or components list).

Second, you mentioned Windows Update not working. It is not working at all, or just not finding a driver for your video card?

If Windows Update is not working at all, I believe this Fixit will help:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/troubleshoot-problems-installing-updates#1TC=windows-7

What caused you to do a driver update in the first place?

How long has this issue been going on?

Which Nvidia drivers are you trying to install?

I have not experienced the broader failure of Windows Update that pashbe1 has experienced, but FWIW I have been unable to install the 2 most recent Nvidia driver updates (the 340.52 being the most recent).

I began to investigate Nv driver issues in various forums, but I just haven't had the time to spend on it. P1 noted that (at least) the Nv driver fail is none to rare & I also came across multiple comments complaining of the same Nv issues.

My difficulty has been on a Samsung QX410-J01 notebook with a stock Nvidia 310M chip & Win7 Home Premium. The comments I've seen didn't appear (at least superficially) to share any easily identifiable common hardware of software patterns.

The best to us all, as this may be the result of The Strain starting to take hold .....

Fixed!

For anyones information who is in the same boat, windows update found the drivers for Nvidia but the install would fail. Just like the Nvidia installer.

The solution that worked for me:

Create a system restore checkpoint.
Use windows uninstall to uninstall all Nvidia anything.
Run display driver uninstaller (DDU).
Open the registry and manually remove anything that is Nvidia.
Reboot.
Download driver.
Unzip driver and launch the .exe

That worked for me. I'm far from knowledgeable, but this certainly seems to be a registry problem. Searching for this problem on google will net you all sorts of forum threads filled with all sorts of methods that people claim worked but didn't for me. Thats just the price we pay for PC gaming....
