I really hope there will be benches with 4x and 5x drivers for the upcoming HL2 review.

i wonder what kind of "cheat" was used in deto 5x. Also i bet it only improve 1~5 fps. I think even with deto 5x nvidia cant catch up with 9x00 series.

I'd like to see it, especially because Valve says not to.

If they are cheating, let someone check them out and see how.

I love that I have an ATi card, but I don't want people to look at these benchmarks and cry "consipiracy". Let nVidia show their best face.

It's pretty obvious to see what Nvidia is doing here. Valve releases the Half-Life 2 demo to the major hardware websites, which shows ATI way in the lead with clearly superior image quality and true DX9 performance. Nvidia can only compete with a Mixed-Mode rendering path that compromises image quality, and even with degraded image quality they are getting trounced by Ati. Half-Life 2 is huge, Nvidia knows this, and they frantically rush out these hacked drivers, knowing full well that websites cannot show screenshots of the game, only numbers and figures. Nvidia has truly become pathetic in my book, and the last Nvidia card worth buying was the GF4. I'm going Ati all the way from now on, not just because they perform better but because their company at least has SOME dignity.

nice improvement there in ps2.0 tests, but not nearly enough to reach ati at the moment

They sure are gonna need more than 25% improvement in PS2.0 to catch ATI in DX9 games. Framerates should be playable though.

From what I've seen this far nVidias has done a great deal for the amount of control they offer. They now have Application control checkboxes for Aniso/FSAA.
They offer built in functionality for custom resolutions and refreshrates. Overlay control etc. is improved as is multi monitor functionality.

The hardware control (overclocking, AGP settings etc.) now works much better and has more options. You can for an example force your fan into 3d mode even while in 2d mode, can't really say that I see the point. But all in all, a lot of added settings and options.

As for games they tend to perform pretty much as the 45 series. 3dmark03 is the same too. Tomb Raider performance is up by quite a bit though. But I must admit that I haven't examined IQ carefully yet.
Still no support for floating point formats in the in game menus for Tomb Raider though, and Pixel Shader 2.0 shadows still crashes the game (with the two boxes underneath still left without any options in them).

Aquanox 2 performance is up a bit too. Not by much but it is noticable. (No change whatsoever in IQ that I can spot)

Another DX9 game that I can't really mention also shows improved performance.. (Without any notable change in IQ at all)

HL2? yeah without a doubt ;)

Haven't done any benchmarking. But it went from choppy galore with a overclocked 5900 Ultra to perfectly playable with a 5900 non-Ultra (not overclocked).

update: hmmm, some levels, such as prague3 (as recommended to benchmark by beyond3d) doesn't show much of an improvement (though there is a slight difference)

benchmark optimized drivers?

I have the drivers. Comparing a 5800ultra to a 5800ultra. I was using 45. somethings (whatever the newest is) Leaked det 50s . I had two computers set up next to each other. The only diffrence is a 200mhz clock in the athlon xp. You can tell from the start which ones are the 45s and which are the 50s. There is a huge quality loss in unreal 2 , morrowind and nwns . However quality went up in some places in the new tomb raider and in quake 3. These are all the games i can test with. And no I can't send you the drivers. And no i can't tell you where I got them from.
spooky

I thought the DEt 50's pretty much take out the fog in HL2? proabably some reason they might be improved.

Valve made it very clear why testing was not allowed with unreleased drivers. No reason to speculate. Its right there in Anands article on the front page.

Here's another reason: they don't render the game properly.

I don`t expect a big improvement even with newer drivers,IQ will be the thing to look out for on the newer Nvidia drivers,as to Valve, I guess they must have a reason why.

Bottom line is they are only drivers and they can only do so much ,don`t expect big improvements.

hows that?

i read the article. it still seemed suspect to refuse to let independent reviewers test using different drivers

what other companies have done this with new game engines?

i guess i should clarify... im not expecting the rel 50 to have much impact (for that matter i really dont care if they have an impact or not)

and none of the reasons valve has mentioned really warrant them making a big stink about not using the beta drivers

It makes enough sense to me. If the drivers aren't available to the general public, why show a comparison?
