The actual real-time rendering demo, not the avi. I'm curious to see how well it will run on a 9700 Pro since it won't use the Cg instructions. How much of a difference can Nvidia Cg really make?

Thats a good idea. Considering that the 9700pro and GF FX are about the same speed, then in theory, the dawn demo should work. I think that the dawn demo still only uses the base DX9 functions and not the extended ones used on the GF FX.

I thought the whole point of the demo was to showcase what their new card and Cg extensions could do. I'd be very surprised if it DIDN'T use them. As you said, the GFFX and the 9700Pro bench fairly close. So a direct comparison between two identical systems, one with GFFX and the other with 9700 Pro should give a fairly accurate idea of how much of a speed increase a totally optimized Cg application/card can have over a regular DX9 card.

IMO tech demos are just pure eye candy, that has been optimised for a particular card, so yes, you could be right about it using all the GF FX functions. But the 9700pro should still be able to run it, it`ll just need more passes to do it in.
Remember the ones for the GF2 GTS card, they`re better looking than games today.
Tech demos are the product of pure optimisation for a particular peice of hardware, thats why we see console games looking better than the hardware that its run on suggests.

The Dawn demo should work, but then again, it might not.
I have a tech demo from my Creative GF3, Creature Isle, on my HD. It looked good on a GF3, i wanted to run it with a 9700 card, to see how it looks with FSAA & AA switched on, but it wont run for some reason.

ATI's demos check if you have the right card... they wont let you run 8500 demos on the 9700 if im not mistaking... so there is no point in trying to run them on nvidia cards... but i dunno about the nvidia demo... ill check... :)
GOTTA LOVE MY RADEON 9700 PRO!!! :)

added:
can you post a link to the demo download (not avi)??? i cant find it...

other way around

i just recently got the 9700 Pro and it wouldnt let me run the 8500 demos cause it said i didnt have a Radeon 8500 card...
obviously the 9700 wouldnt run on a 8500...

btw i downloaded what i think is the nvidia demo... though i think they said its just a screen saver... in any case it wouldnt run... gives a tiny window that says nothing, with an OK button... press it and it closes... looks more like a virus to me... :) figures for nVidia...

I was running the 8500 demos with my 9700 when I first got it. I'll check again, maybe its a driver issue?

Update: Depends on the demo, the dolphin demo needs n-patch hardware support (truform) the 8500 has hardware truform, the 9700 does not. The scattering light demo runs fine, nature demo runs fine...all the shader demos seem OK.

I thought I remembered that also, turns out that it may not work after cat3 / DX9..not sure which, but that demo definately does not work for me now...the others do.

Here's a link to the older ATI demo, Rage Dawning. Can't seem to get it to work on my 9500. Maybe somebody else will have better luck.

There's a patch in the zip file that's supposed to enable this demo with any card and any operating system. You can see a small screenshot of the demo here.
