Nvidia cuts prices on all their GPUs in the 900 Series

Yeah, that was hilarious.

Poor AMD, can't seem to catch a break. Nvidia is really ruthless, they're in a bleeding contest and they know AMD has far less blood in their body. Good for us in the holidays season, bad for us in the long term.
 
That custom-cooled MSI 980 Ti for $559 at Newegg is just wow. Unlike all the other 900-series GPUs the 980 Ti isn't gimped in DX12. There's no way a Fury X can compete at those prices since it's an objectively worse card than the 980 Ti by any fair measure.

The problem for AMD is that just seeing more sales isn't enough if most of those sales are in the sub-$300 space because the margins are poor. Even if your revenue increases a lot but you still post large net income losses, what has changed? AMD needs net profit more than anything.

That means they need to sell high-margin chips, a.k.a their Fury GPUs over the 980 Ti. NV barely waited a single day to respond, and so now it's a race to the bottom and we all know which company has a fat belly and which is starving on the street.

AMD really needs a new investor at this stage and to cut their CPUs loose. They can't compete in this way and NV knows it.

In the sub $300 space everyone is buying 970's - look at amazon or steam, it's all 970's. If you go much cheaper then power and size becomes a major consideration as you probably don't have a fancy case and huge psu, in which case the 750ti, 950 and 960 all of which are low power and can come in cards 17cm long start to look very appealing. The only real gap is between the 960 and the 970 but as the sales show so far a surprising number of people are willing to spend the extra and get a 970.

If you go down in price you have to make sacrifices. Any sensible gamer would sacrifice the looks of their card, the acoustics, power draw, temperature and get as much performance as they can get.

Sadly, most are not sensible and value brand, looks, and all of the above more then their framerate.
Some even upgrade their gpus to match their new PC style. All that while not even going for high end parts.
'Premium mainstream' is a marketing gimmick to suck $ out of naive people.

Give up with the "no one buys AMD because everyone is a dumb" arguments for once. They are not dumb, most lower end setups are constrained by cooling, power and size as it's just some shop bought or low end pc. The nvidia cards hit that target market very well.

The AMD card's were fine at the high end where everyone has custom setups and builds their own pc's but that market bottoms out at about the GTX 970 which is what everyone is buying. Under that size, power requirements and heat output becomes a much more major concern and trying to sell say a 380 even if it does have good performance and a low price becomes tricky.
 
Haven't these prices and the AMD prices been reflected in the Newegg deals that have been available all week now? Great job being days late with the breaking news. Gotta get those clicks. For extra clicks, split it up into two articles. Big deal.

Yep, I was terrified for a second. Just placed an order yesterday and thought prices dropped again this morning.
 
Are Nvidia's and AMD's recent price cuts limited to US?

I do not see any price reduction for graphics cards in shops here. Same thing in a Germany-based online shop. Or it is too early and they have to sell all the cards in stock at older (higher) prices?

Anyone outside US noticed any price drops on Nvidia or AMD graphics cards (not limited to a discount here and there, but generalized as this article implies)?

Usually our Amerifriends see the best discounts. Here in Canada, and pretty much the rest of the world, we get a stick in our bum.
 
The collective IQ at WCCFFCrap is mindnumbing. Newegg said specifically that those prices are good until Nov. 29. After that, business as usual. They can always change their mind given the permission from Nvidia, but that crap website needs flushing down the toilet.

The Nvidia price cuts were already known around the Web at most deal sites.
The AMD price cuts were not mentioned on anandtech or slickdeals, and most people STILL don't care about them.

These aren't even better prices than AMD except for the 980Ti which we already know about and if you havne't seen RS posted this deal already, you don't visit here very often.
 
Competition is good, unless you're a shareholder.

And these prices only reflect the US market, elsewhere it's still a ripoff from both sides.
 
Yeah I don't think any of these are official price cuts, just sales/promos on specific cards both on the AMD and NVIDIA side.

I've been shopping for the past week and the prices quoted in the article are what I've been seeing, even before AMD dropped their price. This might be a discount compared to what it was a month ago, but not within the past week.
 
Isn't this the same site that reported NV price cutting GTX 980 Ti something like 2-3 months ago based on a discounted poorly reviewed MSI 980 Ti with fugly/custom shroud?

They also ran an article claiming AMD gained performance citing TechPowerUp's new game line up but failed to realize all the games featured in the old game line up and new game line up saw zero change.

Woof, I wonder if they're own by Gawker?

Indeed, this has got to become more of an issue. In Sweden, where I am, it's not like we lack etailer competition. We have at least 6-7 strong players. That's why Amazon never bothered to come to Scandinavia, because the situation is the same in Denmark, Norway and Finland.

On most stuff we have strong price competition but for GPUs in particular there's none. It seems like America is the only place in the west with (relatively) cheap hardware.

Wccftech is based in Pakistan as far as I know. I don't think you can expect them to know that kind of detail if they're not based in the U.S. You have too much of a U.S.-centric world view. I certainly didn't know that either because, guess what, I don't live in the U.S. either.

Lastly, at least you acknowledge that NV is involved in long-term pricing decisions. I've read some crazily ignorant stuff that claims that NV has no power over pricing at all and that it's all Wccftech making stuff up that NV does have that power, but as you mention, if Newegg kept these prices are after black friday/cyber monday holidays, that would indeed need the input of NV.
 
Gotta love those that claim the presence of AMD doesn't mean anything because nVidia "competes with themselves". :awe:
