should support tri-fire as well, as there will be an X2 card as well.

Ratios are used to create a simplified comparison between things with disimilar units.

A "ratio" is just a comparison between two different things. For instance, someone can look at a group of people, count noses, and refer to the "ratio of men to women" in the group. Suppose there are thirty-five people, fifteen of whom are men. Then the ratio of men to women is 15 to 20.

and

A ratio is one thing compared to or related to another thing; it is just a statement or an expression.

http://www.purplemath.com/modules/ratio2.htm

For example in order to create conversion factors you must first make a ratio.

How many centimeters are in an inch? There are 2.54cm per inch. The ratio of cm to inches is precisely 2.54:1

Conversion factors are simplified ratios, so they might be covered around the same time that you're studying ratios and proportions.

To my knowledge the terminology "price/performance ratio" is a legitimate and rational use of the term "ratio".

ah, ok, so I guess the base idea of what the definition of a ratio was/is possibly wrong. my bad. Still, I will ask my old highschool chem teacher. He will be especially interested in my post as he stresses units and is into gaming and computer tech. he may even want me to help upgrade his comp this fall! he was recently promoted to the HS equivalent of division dean for science.

interesting that it mentions rates as ratios as well, as well as the "per" word.

Yep. What's the price of gas these days? A ratio. How about stock prices? A ratio of USD to ticker symbol.

The world we live in (capitalism, consumerism) is rife with ratios that we might not think of as being ratios, all of trade/bartering/consumerism is about ratios. Goods to goods, goods to dollars, dollars to euros, etc.

I SERIOUSLY hope this was a joke post.

It's a troll post.

I do expect the GT300 to be faster, but it will cost more and come later. Even if they can match the 5800 series is performance/$ what stops ATi from having small price drops to swing it back in there favor?

Although at 2 billion transistors they won't have the flexibility that the 4800 series had.

lol wut? Blatant fanboi much?

He's just making fun of NV Shmee, NV actually made some official statement to the effect of what he is saying, it came out a week ago or so.

thank you. sorry guys, forgot the sarcasm icon on that one :)

edit: @ rezist: it doesn't matter how many transistors they have, it matters how large the die is and what kind of yield they get. 5xxx is on 40nm vs 55nm for 4xxx, so they can fit quite a few more transistors in a similar area. Also, you have to compare yields at LAUNCH of 5xxx to yields at LAUNCH of 4xxx, since they are probably much higher today then they were in june 08.

*tap tap* Cards have never been as cheap and as powerful as now.

And as equally stacked between the two competitors. Isn't a dime's worth of difference performance-wise between the various lower-middle, middle, and upper-middle cards.

*Awaits Cult of Saint Charlie followers to make baseless claims against this rumor*

He might not be wrong in what he says. I mean, he NEVER said directly that the cards sucked or the performance was too low to be hopeless like that. Delays and low yields are bad news but not always related to performance.

It might suck in performance/watt, or performance/$.
