Overall it works but.....

I think the way MST works is causing me grief with my 780 ti's. The main trouble is that waking the monitor (UP2414Q) from a cold boot takes a few power cycles to get signal.

When I press the power button on my pc, the monitors backlight kicks on then goes blank and says that there is no signal. It take a couple power cycles of the monitor to get picture. It does this with either card and now I can confirm the same thing with a replacement monitor.

The issue only happens while using either displayport on the monitor but not with the HDMI (no 4k) port.

The other issues is that very infrequently the screen will come up as 2 different resolutions split right down the middle. A power cycle will fix this as well.

2 different cards, 2 OSes (windows 7, 8.1 and even the bios) and 2 different monitors all exhibit the same issues.

Anybody else able to share experiences?

Not waking from sleep is a common issue with displayport in general, for some reason, i've experienced it with 7970CF and on the NV side. Actually, with the 7970s, they just crashed when waking up from sleep. So I had to turn sleep off. But with NV sometimes you have to power cycle the monitor. Displayport is very quirky for some reason, I don't know why. I don't have experience with 4k yet, though.

I would suggest turning off monitor sleep and put a screen saver on.

Sorry i can't be of more help.

I had similar quirks with the PQ321 and Titan SLI. I did not need to do the cycling you do at startup to get picture after getting MST setup the first time. But, once the system was rolling I would get one half of the screen shifting to the side and off screen, then it would slowly creep back over. Other times one half would flash green momentarily.

Have to remember nvidia is doing a hack job for 4K @60hz, you are running two screen surround to make it work.

I think 4k will be much better on 20nm cards with DP 1.3, no surround hackjob for 4k 60hz and more gpu horsepower to actually push games at good settings. Also hopefully prices coming down and not having to spend $3500 for a high quality big 4K screen. Right now it is just not ready.

Aside from the issues, how do you like it? Whats it like to play a game?

I never said from sleep. I said cold boot. Meaning machine powered down overnight.

moonbogg, Aside from the issues... 185 ppi is amazing and after just 2 weeks looking at my u3011 is gross. Already don't want to go back to 110ish ppi.... ever.

The 780 ti's can run just about anything maxed out (no AA, not exactly needed, lol) pretty much at locked at 60 fps. Only Crysis 3 Very High Shaders gets me down to about 45fps so I just click that one setting down to high. BF4... no sweat, 60 fps. honestly, even 1 card is enough for just about any game more than a year old.

groove, I am aware that behind the scenes it is more or less a surround hack job but this monitor is worth it... I think. maybe I should just return it and wait a year? =P

At $1000 it's not so bad. The experience of the resolution is really nice. I just couldn't stomach the price I paid for the Asus screen and being unhappy with the performance. I couldn't keep 60fps at max settings in the games I wanted, particularly BF3. Also, I'm hoping the price is going to drop significantly on the 32" IGZO screens. That may not happen though with all the new 4K screens we're seeing announced. The IGZO may always be treated as a premium ultra expensive screen.

I'm not even certain that we are going to get a more 'natural' experience running 4K with the 20nm cards. It does seem a sensible expectation though that we'll get DP 1.3 or HDMI 2.0 on the new cards and not have to run surround/eyefinity to get 4K @ 60hz. I think having to run MST and the hack job driver side is where most of the problems are.

Why return it unless you are unhappy with the experience. The one caveat to that is that we likely will get 4K panels with DP 1.3/HDMI 2.0 support in a short time and that is going to make the current 4K models seem less than stellar, with them lacking support for being run @ 60hz with a single connection that does not require MST & surround to work.

My bad lava. I have a bad habit of just browsing the post and not looking at all the details.

4K just seems like a clusterf--- right now, on both the GPU and display end. Hopefully most of these issues will be sorted out by the 2nd half of the year, and not cost $4000 for a monitor and new GPU just to run at 35 fps. I'd really like to see the Witcher 3 in 4K :D

I've heard that you can sometimes fix the issues with displayport by trying a different cable. Likely a more expensive one than the monoprice stuff.

From what I hear, the problem isn't so much the monitor (or even the video card) as much as it is BIOS/UEFI. Windows is hunky dory once it's up and running, but BIOS/UEFI doesn't handle MST very well. Which means you're fine once you're loaded, but it leads to cold boot problems very similar to what you've described, and for which I haven't seen any surefire solutions.

now that you mention it.

have 3 asus vs239h-p on 3 evga 680 4gb. only one of the monitor have that exact same issue.

only happen once in a blue moon.

regardless of mode: surround or all active. only that one particular monitors does that. maybe I should switch the gpu around and see if the problem follows the gpu.

Nice. I'll have to check one out some time.

I get exactly the same symptoms on with my AMD R9 270 card and Dell UP2414Q monitor. The graphics card and/or monitor are not always communicating properly. The issue was much worse with a GTX 660, but is still present with this card. And since this can happen on a cold boot, it is _not_ only a driver issue. I'm hoping for a firmware update from Dell and/or AMD to address the issue, and am waiting for a replacement cable to try (but my guess is that firmware update(s) (at least) will be needed.)
I've asked Dell which graphics cards have been tested with this monitor, and they haven't replied. It's also unusual that they don't have a list of compatible cards in any of the sales material.

It seems that displayport(tm) DP 1.2 MST is just not quite ready for prime time. Any other "4k" monitor experiences? ASUS monitor models working well?

The DP 1.2 protocol should be able to handle 4K@60Hz without needing the MST hack. But the problem is that, at this time, there are no receiver/scaler chips that can handle this. So the fault really lies with the monitor electronics, not the video cards.

Since this thread is seeing some action I want to add that I still see the same problems.

The monitor won't boot up in standby from a cold boot. I either have to shut monitor off when I shut my computer down, power cycle the screen or pull the displayport cable and reattach

Next up, I have tried multiple cable to no avail. I even tried making a cable vesa compliant by removing the # 20 pin. A google search will educate you if you don't know what I am talking about.

I still get an infrequent splitting up of resolution on the screen if I wake the monitor from going stand by or it has even happend coming out of a game. What I mean by this issue is that split right down the middle the left and right sides are a different resolution.

Not sure who is responsible for my issues, whether it be Dell or nVidia, but they still exist and they are low level, meaning firmware. My buddy who has the same monitor and a vanilla 780 have the same issues as me.

not likely causing your issue but
you could check your play back sound devices [right click speaker icon > play back devices] , win 7 made my monitor a sound device when I switched to a display port cable. didn't cause me any issues but along with the 8 nv hdmi sound devices from the new cards they all got disabled real quick.

Try switching your System Power option to High Performance if you are currently on a Balanced plan.

Yes You can do 1 cable at 4K @ 60hz with DP. If you want to game at 1080p though there is no scaling, so you'll see a small black box in the center of the screen.

To add to the conversation, I'm having the same problems above when into windows. I have no problems at the BIOS screen. I did have problems while in the middle of a game sometimes the screen would go black, or show two different panels of the screen. Sometimes when I would reconnect the DP cable and / or power cycle the monitor to fix the issues the system would just reboot altogether (rare, but it has happened more than two times).

I've tried two different cables but I'm up for trying a higher priced one. I know Vega (Hard OCP, or callsignvega from overclockers) has this monitor and does not have these issues. He mentioned the stock cable that comes with this monitor is junk. I've contacted him to see what cable he is using.

I have had the same thing happen too. Not frequent but it has happend more than twice.
I do also have the same problem in windows but I was just trying to make the point that it isn't limited to being in windows

I experience a similar (or the same, we should check in greater detail) problem: at boot my UP2414Q goes into Power Save Mode instead of showing the BIOS screen.

The problem is aggravated by the fact that the Linux driver does not wake up the monitor, but rather detects absence of connected screens and shuts down, resulting in a completely unusable system.

There is however a workaround: before powering on the system, press the bottom touch button, wait for the on screen message which invites the user to wake up the system, then press it a second time entering the input choice menu (DP/miniDP/HDMI/Scan). In that state, the monitor is active for a few seconds, and if I switch the PC on the connection is established and the BIOS screen is shown.

I'd be curious to know if it works for any of you as well.

BTW, I'm using an NVIDIA GTX 660.
