nVidia 9800 cards?

I think I read somewhere that the 9800 cards will be released in March (the 11th, my b-day, in fact). Is this true? Any prices listed for these yet? I assume there isn't any kind of comparison to an 8800GT 512 then yet?

I have a 8800GTS 320 and It doesn't run games like I'd like it to. I just got The Settlers: Rise of an Empire and it won't even let me raise certain settings past a certain spot because those settings require a card with 512 MB of memory.
 
I doubt it'll be a factory overclocked 8800 GTS, blogs are blogs and you can never fully trust them with information they didn't receive from the company they are talking about, I look forward to purchasing the 9800 GTXs.
 
From what I've read it looks like the 9800 series cards are going to be an epic failure, though no one can say for sure yet until we see some benchmarks.

The 9600's seem to be the only winners from the 9 series. Hopefully the real next gen cards will be out soon.
 
It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know the 9800GTX is just a modified 8800GTS 512MB, that being said, NVIDIA will probably do a little more tweaking than just a simple overclock, nothing major though, just enough so that the 9800GTX can beat an Ultra (the current GTS 512 is only on par with a GTX right now) and NVIDIA can finally retire the G80 core.
 
I just wish they'd bring out the GT200 we keep hearing rumors about. I'm sick of these silly refreshes. They should have called GeForce 9 series 8900.

Wait for the Geforce 8800 GTX to drop down in price a little more and make sure you get a EVGA but brand new that way if Nvidia's real beast of a video card comes out a few months after March or April high end refresh video cards you can step up to it.

that is precisely my plan of action.
 
evga has an "absolutely no crosshipping" limitation on trade ups...and also they limit your choices based on supply, so new cards might not be avilable, and finally, they charge way too much for new cards (more then in stores)...

I prefer the XFX method... you have a lifetime warranty for you and for the person you sell your card to. So I buy XFX, when new card comes out I sell it WITH a lifetime warranty (fetches a higher price) and buy that new card I wanted. Or rather, I buy the new card THEN sell the old one... that way I don't have to wait 2 weeks without a computer

Um, not if you want a new card. Step-up got you a better price (and more reliable inventory) for the 8800GT than early store buyers.
 
early GT buyers got if for 230$... later GT buyers got it for 300$... stepping up to a GTS 512MB today they value the GTS at 380$... despite it costing 300 AND has a MIR on large etailers like newegg.

You would pay a lot more for the step up then you would selling it on ebay and buying the better card

gtx and ultra have already eol'd I believe. Buy one quick if you want one new.

I've never done the xfx route but it does make a lot of sense. EVGA has earned their solid reputation, but step-up is rarely a smart investment.
 
No.. still: Buy 2xPalit 9600 GT, sell your current motherboard and buy one capable of SLI, use your saved 40 USD for good motherboard chipset cooler + something nice for your self.
9600 GT SLI is much stronger set than single 8800 GTX. In DX9 1600x1200 4xAA/16xAF difference is 35%, in DX10 it's 25%. On idle it consumes 20W less and on load 4W more

my current board is capable of SLI.

what does everyone else think of this?
 
i'm not sure that i even have room in my system to do SLI, even though I do have a mobo that supports it.

according to the benchmarks listed previously, the 8800gt 512 is still a good bit lower than the 8800 GTX 512.

Do you mean 8800GTX 768MB?

And by a good bit slower, in most games it's 10% or about 3-5 fps. Not worth $160 difference to me, but maybe if you have more available cash it would be worth it. Keep in mind that the (G80-based) GTX is going to run hotter and use considerably more energy than the (G92-based) GT.

yeah, meant the 768, sorry.

those benchmarks i mentioned were showing up to like 20 FPS more, unless I was looking at it wrong.

Also keep in mind that it'll spank the GT in high resolutions/AA. Still not worth it tho, if you want to go 88xx, an XFX 8800GTS 512mb would be a good buy cause you can sell it for a good price with the transferable warranty and get a 98xx if they turn out to be good.
