Ok, so my laptop has an issue where for some games it will simply crap out. for Sins of a Solar Empire it just has a fatal error immediatley, and Warhammer Online craps out every couple hours with a CTD issue, etc.

Aftewards it says that the video card driver has recovered from an error

now my drivers are the latest drivers for the 8600m GT, however unforunately nVidia no longer apparently support this device in any way, and tells those with it to go to their manufacturers website for drivers, in this case, Acer. The driver they have there is exactly the one I have installed, however I tried to uninstall and reinstall the driver, and the driver setup program cancelled itself saying that it found no compatible hardware on my system. I tried both the 32 and 64 versions, neither would get past that point. I'm using the same ones that Acer is hosting right now on their website, I just can't get them to reinstall.

However I don't have any issues with games like Dawn of War for some reason.

specs for laptop are as follows

(Acer Aspire 7720-6604)

3gb RAm

Core2 duo t8100

Nvidia 8600m GT

Windows Vista Ultimate 64

-thanks!

You'll need to start googling around to see if there is an older driver set you can use.

Sounds like overheating. Happens to me quite rarely, I'm using a Vostro 1500 with that graphics chip; running games like TF2 and HL2:Ep2 the bottom of the laptop is noticeably hot. If it crashed out, it would say give that error which I've seen on desktop computers in the past to be the GPU shutting down for a second to stop overheating. If that's the case there's not very much you can do about it; maybe use a utility to dial-down the speed of your GPU manually :(.

Mmm...I'll see if I can find an older driver set.

It doesn't seem like its getting very hot, and I get the same problem just when opening Sins of a Solar Empire but it just crashes immediately. I had an overheating problem on my desktop, and that was a pain, I hope its not one here, but I don't think it is, as it will still run some games just fine all day long practically, but just dies on others for some reason.

thanks for the replies so far!
