i'd like to know if a Delta 300watt psu from a Dell system can handle an:

intel c2d e4400
nvidia 8400 gs (pci-express)
2 x 1gb ram
1 sata hdd
1 sata dvd burn

all system stock, psu is about 1.5 years old.

bold = potential new card to replace dead 8300gs.

PSU capacity related post -- kicking over to PSUs.

under load that system would only pull around 100-120 watts so if that psu cant handle that then it is absolute junk. I hope you dont actually intend to paly games with that system though.

madden 09 is the only game played on this system...

the nvidia spec for an 8400gs is 450 watts tho. i'm not sure what that means...

It should even run a 8600gt.

i wouldn't run the 8600gt in a dell 300watt psu. maybe it'd work for a short period, but PSU's are most efficient running under 50% load at all times.

An example of a rig that would pull 300watts or less under full load would be maybe a C2D OC'd a bit, 4 DIMMS, a hard drive and a 9800GT. Maybe even a GTX260. Add to that how Dell PSU's are usually underrated (i.e., if they rate it at 300w it's probably good for 350w), and you will have no problems

Nvidia recommends a 450w psu to make sure that if you're using a crappy psu you'll have plenty of power. But, since dell usually uses good quality PSU's these days (most are delta-made) you can get away with half that and be fine

Most Dell PSU's are very underrated. You should be able to run it on that PSU with no problem.

i know thats how much a system will draw at load, BUT you're aware that psus dont lie being at 100% load 24/7 right? i prefer to load my PCPC 610 at about 40-50% load at all times

it would run just fine. you could get a 2600xt which uses more power right from the factory configuration on a Dell with that psu. the ops system with an 8600gt would draw about 125-135 watts at the most.

Yes, I am fully aware that PSU's shouldn't be loaded 100% for long periods of time. Are you aware that the config you're suggesting would likely never break 150w under full load, which is still far away from the 300w the Dell is rated at?
