nvidia 6800 gt 256 mb overheating

I have had a new computer (specs in signature) since july 2005 and just recently my videocard has been overheating to 130 degrees C. I have a nvidia 6800 gt 256 mb videocard and it has worked fine for a lot of games such as GTA:SA, HL2, the sims 2, etc. Just recently I bought the new Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and have been trying a bunch of tweaks to get better framerates to run the game at the high settings it detected for my system.

Well what happened was I downloaded a Coolbits tweak and it increased me framerate, but my videocard also popped up warnings about the card overheating to temperatures of 130 C. So I am wondering what I can do about my overheating problems?

I have no overlocked anything in my system ever, and I have stock cooling. I checked for dust and will get an air duster to clean parts and see where it takes me. Other than that, what can I do to get my card back at normal temperatures?

Undoing whatever you did with coolbits seems like a pretty logical place to start, no?

do I just uninstall my nvidia drivers to uninstall coolbits or is there another way?

Have you cleaned out the PC recently? If you built it last summer the heatsink could simply be clogged with dust.

sounds like you oc'd your card without knowing it. I'd unistall that program "coolbits" also the stock cooling should be good enough to keep the card a decent temps so maybe better airflow possibly.

when I installed coolbits, it just had a .reg file and I just installed that without getting any option to overclock the card.

How do I delete the .reg file?

I have yet to clean out my PC, but today I bought an air duster so I plan on cleaning up a bit tonight.

Just reset your card to default speeds, and clean out your pc. If your still getting these pop-ups while playing games, buy an aftermarket cooler such as the VF-700 or VF-900 from Zalman, or one of the Arctic Silencers(watch the version or revision).

Watch out with what you install... .reg files can be any kind of registry changing file and some people maliciously edit those reg files to do damage to persons computers.. I would not use any reg files to overclock a card..:|

Coolbits is ok to use. If you didn't check the box to allow manual overclocking, acknowledge the agreement, and move the sliders you haven't overclocked your card. If it didn't overheat before I'd look at a loose heatsink.

ok I reinstalled my drivers, and coolbits was taken out. But what do you know? It is still exceeding temps! It was around 122 then peaked and gave me the pop up again.

Should I go for a cooling method?

NO WAY was it 130C- if it hit 130C, you wouldnt be using it right now. It'd be DEAD. Even the X1900 series can't go much above 90C without dying.

Go into the Display settings, Advanced, Clock Frequency Settings, and reset them to default.

Also try to keep track of whatever you're doing when you're overclocking so that you can revert back -- overclocking is never safe.

And clean out the dust / whatever in your video card.

An alternative add-on cooler is the Arctic Cooling NV Silencer 5 (rev. 3) -- around $30, decent cooling, and a fix if your cooler is malfunctioning.

Just for clarity: all the coolbits .reg file does is add some registry entries that unlock advanced menus in the nVidia control panel. So unless you did something further then you didn't get any overclocking just by installing that.

By the way, I have a 6800 GT with coolbits hack enabled, and my "Core Slowdown Threshold" is 120 deg. C. Did you set yours to 135?

the thermal paste of the stock cooler(if at all, maybe u have thermal pads)get all crummy and ineffective after a year or two, and reseating it properly with some AS5 does help. Make sure you have adequate case airflow, and yes, I do think dust is the problem too because my laptop got up to the 60s and 70s(C) but when I took it apart I saw that the huge heatsink had dust bunnies stuck in the fins. It really was the LARGEST single piece of dust I had EVER seen. Get some dust filters or use some random foam or speaker cloth from a grill and it should work fine for the intake. To help as a temporary solution for now, leave the side panel off and put the PC to the left so that it won't be as noisy with the open side away from your ears.

I tried using an air duster I bought at compusa, but I couldn't get the videocard out of the pci-e socket, so I tried to squeeze the can inside and aim at the fan. It bearly removed any dust, and it still gives me high temps.

will small cooling fans work?

You couldn't remove the card? :Q

Don't forget there's a clip holding the card in place, unclip that first.

that clip just won't come off 🙁 I actually broke a piece of it last night, but the vidcard still wouldn't come out. How do I safely unclip?

Oh and will small case fans help at all?

I had the same exact problem, as outlined in thread.

The solution was to remove the card, and then remove the cover of the stock heatsink (small screws). Once the cover is removed, you'll see the entrance to the heatsink (ie, the side the fan pushes air in) is completely blocked with dust. Removing the dust lowered my load temps from 100 to 60.
