nvidia 5900 or ATI (tho not ATI) 9800pro?

I am going to upgrade from my old 4200 and have a choice of from the two used cards above. I have both on the table ready to go into two computers.

The card I don't use is going into a lite-use computer that could get away with less. I do some minor gaming so I'd perfer the 'better' card to go into my computer.

Is there an advantage of one over the other?

Forgot to mention that prob 80% of my apps are 2d - office type use. Just looking for better 3d when I use it.

Think the 9800 is better for 2d also. I'm also replacing a 19" crt with a 19" lcd dvi in the very near future. Both cards have dvi.

The 9800pro is probably 15% faster than the 5900 in most cases with the 5900 actually performing better in some games. The two are pretty equal when gaming at lower-middle resolution ( 1024x 768 ) but the gap widens when you increase resolution / use AA & AF. Depending on which review you read, you will find that the 5900 is declared the winner OR the 9800pro is the winner. The best thing to do , if you have both cards, is test both with 3D Mark 03 in your own rig. Some games favor ATi and others favor nVidia, so you might have to pick a winner based on which games you will play the most.

As you can see from my sig., I didn't choose either GPU maker and have one of each. I play "nVidia" games on one and "ATi" games on the other.

I dont think the person in question ever recommended an FX card. I think it was more the card was a unique piece of hardware

In lower resolutions and in OGL the 5900 can keep up and sometimes edge it out. However it gets utterly killed in DX9 and shader intensive games. IQ is better on the 9800's not like night and day, but definitely better.

Unless you already have the card a 6600GT or the X800GT/GTO/SE/NU are all better cards and similiarly priced.

I've had both cards running in 2 PC at the same time and the 9800 Pro had far fewer "stutters" during gaming than the FX5900 (which was the "vanilla" version and NOT the slower clocked "XT" version) to include Doom 3, BF1942 and Far Cry.

I was VERY dissappointed with the FX5900 as far as 3D gaming was concerned.

Get the effing cheaper card. If 80% of your apps are 2D then 3D performance doesn't matter as mcuh.

If the 5900 is cheaper then it will be a fine card that will play the occasional game you throw at it.

9800 Pro is the superior all around card.

If you can get the 5900 for $20 or more cheaper, take it and take your girlfriend out for dinner with the money you would have spent on the 9800 Pro.

Wow thanks for the good info. I'm going to use the 9800pro.

I actually have both cards, I got them via parts swaps on two upgrades I did. Now the 5900 will go into someone elses computer.
