nvidia 40.72 drivers

hi, can anyone help with this problem. i uninstalled my nvidia 30.82 drivers to install the new 40.72
but i could not install, it would tell me the installation could not continue because it could not find the vn4_disp.inf file. any suggestions what i need to do.

Try this
For those of you having trouble, extract the files from the installer. Right click on My Computer and select properties. Next click Device Manager and expand Display Adapters. There should just be your video card listed under it(Example: NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti 4400). Next, Right Click on the video card. It will bring up a new window that has 3 tabs, click the driver tab, then click the Update Driver button. The driver wizard will come up, select the option to "specify the location of the driver". From there, point it to the folder with the extracted files( ie, C:\NVIDIA\Win9x\40.72\). After it locates the files, it will do the rest.

Btw if you`ve WinXP point it to C:\Nvidia\XP folder & don`t forget to disable anti-virus before install.

 
should i completely uninstall the 30.82 from add remove from the control panel, then use the detonator destroyer or the 30-40
fix???? before installing the 40.72 drivers. by what i have been reading a lot of people have used the fix or is it really needed??

It depends,some have installed over the old ones without any problems, however in general most have removed the old drivers first which`s the safest way.What I did was remove the old drivers, reboot then install the new drivers and reboot then install the patch fix and reboot.See the thread here .
 
is the detonator destoyer any good for cleaning up on these drivers, i'm using win 98 se & the video card is msi g-4 4200

I use WinXP so can`t really comment on how good detonator destroyer will work,but you can try it.
 
With the NVidia driver a week thing...I tend to just delete any INF file that starts with NV before I put in a new driver 🙂
 
do you apply the 30xx-40xx driver fix after you uninstall the old drivers or after the installation of the of the 40xx drivers
i thought you would apply after the uninstallation of the old drivers???

I found/use the following prior to changing Detonator drivers... Cleans stuff up well:

1) Run Regedit and navigate to this key.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr
entVersion
2) Record the locations entered in the "Device Path" value..
3) Search these locations and also, if not included, these below also for any nv3.*nf, nv4.*nf or nv4_disp.inf files and delete them.
C:\WINDOWS\System32\ReinstallBackups (allsubfolders)
C:\DRIVERS\VIDEO (for Dell Systems)
C:\WINDOWS\Inf (which should be the first entry in the device path)
4) Uninstall and reboot - you should be using the standard VGA controller at this point - but if not dont worry.

*********NEW SECTION OF ADVICE**********************
5) Add ";c:\nvidia" to the end of the device path value (without the quotation marks).
6) Create a folder at c:/nvidia and extract new drivers here.

Note: For future updates - extract new drivers to c:/nvidia then uninstall Dets and reboot- afterwards the new drivers will install automatically. Then reboot again and use the RefreshTool and then reboot again and you're ready to go.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic

es\nv4 and delete this key.

Note: (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servi
ces\nv is the key which is used for detonator drivers whereas the nv4 is only for OEM and stock XP drivers)
8) Got to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro
l\Video
and delete any keys (eg. FF890-7895-7896-3611) which refer to detonator drivers.
(Uninstall drivers if not working under standard VGA) and reboot.
9) Drivers should now be installed automatically. Reboot and use the refreshTool. Reboot and you're ready to go.



****TO DISABLE AUTO-INSTALL OF ALL DRIVERS*********
Export the Device Path value in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr
entVersion for backup purposes.
Now delete the Device Path data (all the locations entered).
XP should not be able to auto-install drivers without you manually pointing to them.

NOTE: I have never tried the stared portions so I can't comment about that part

tried your suggetions & i was able to install this time but when i check the adpter info the bus: is at agp 2x how do i change to 4x
the card i have is msi g4-ti 4200

That should be in your BIOS set up somewhere (MoBo)

Probably in "advanced chipset features" check your MoBo manual

i checked in "advanced chipset features" in the BIOS on my MoBo & it says 4x enabled, i have asus p3v4x, so i'm not sure why its coming up in the display properties under g4 ti4200 adapter infomation bus: 2x?? any suggestions

That one's got me baffled.......

have you used any kind of tweak program? maybe a leftover registry entry that shouldn't be there? (I'm really grasping at straws here....)

Only suggestion I have left would be to do the driver clean-out procedure I posted (unless you already did).

One last ditch effort, toggle the 2X setting in BIOS, boot and check the display... then toggle it back to 4X.

That`s a VIA chipset board so did you install the VIA AGP DRIVER (part of the VIA 4 in 1 drivers) in turbo mode?

Dug,it`s a patch tool fix for removing elements of 30.xx that conflict with 40.xx drivers when you upgrade .

Weird that that has happened ,anyway you can install the VIA AGP driver again and see if it clears it up(might as well install latest VIA AGP driver).

Bad news is VIA Arena is down so you can`t download the AGP driver on it`s own,however you can get the latest VIA 4 in 1 drivers from Guru3D under VIA section (4.43 is the lastest set) .

I normally just run the VIA setup install program as stated above,it`s pretty easy ,however there`s a full installation guide at VIA Arena,but the site is down at the moment.
 
i installed the latest VIA 4 in 1 driver v 4.43 & everything works like a charm, the agp is back to 4x. another ?? in the bios what should
i have my graphics aperture size to: 256 or 128. i have it at 256, i do have 256 mb of ram on my win 98 se computer

I would go with 64mb or 128mb for AGP size.
