Time to eat crow. Its a paper launch. Availability is horrendous and has driven prices of the founders edition cards well over $1000.

GG nVidia, the prices of this card are ~double what you said they would be.

My two 1080s shipped. Hardly a paper launch.

I just bought an MSI FE now, since I lost interest in the MSI Aero.

Expected delivery 31-05-2016 - 01-06-2016 (That's with postal).

I picked one up at the St. Louis MC. Same deal here mostly. They handed out slips of paper good for a card till 10AM. The 6th person in line said they were there at 6AM. About 20 people in front of me and I got the last one. Allegedly they had 35 cards, so a dozen or so bought 2. Saw another dude not in line with 2 slips of paper and found out he used to work there so got a hookup I think.

Don't need a FE lecture though, this will work for me well. I hand my cards down to SFF cases that can't accommodate custom coolers.

Edit: the extra $100 sucks but apparently flying off shelves so get used to it I think..

Basically same in my area. I was scheduled to to Thyroid Aspirates today so I wasn't able to sneak out during MC Open hours.

However, my commute to work passes it and I saw a crowd. I believe our MC had 32-35 cards too. I was number 24 (I was there at 625AM, shift starts at 7AM).

They did 1 voucher per person, flyer said 2 cards per person but I guess they changed that when they saw the crowd forming. Anyways, guy offered me $1,000, I took it and ran. I didn't even go back to see if they had anymore haha.

I totally understand your frustration. My guess is that they had >20 people in line already by 6am, and tbh if there are then they might as well just give people vouchers and let them go to breakfast or w/e and come back rather than force them to stand there for 3 hours needlessly.

More than likely, OP probably wouldn't have got one either way so nothing to be terribly mad about. It's day 1 launch and there's limited stock because production of the units takes time, I don't see an issue with that, the people wanting to flip them can only do that for a profit if people are willing to pay the premium just to have it a few days earlier.

Honestly the stock will pick back up again in a few weeks and there will be more and the price will fall to close to the RRP and people will stop flipping them, etc.

The mania that is a product lauch this big is only for a very tiny period of time and if you absolutely must have a limited product early on then pay the premium for it or just wait, the complaining is a bit tiresome.

I guess op has never seen what certain sales like when new consoles come out or during black friday years ago were like.

Expecting to get it on the day of release just a few minutes before the store opens is a laugh.

Nabbed one too...just took some patience on EVGA.com. I actually think it will tougher to get the better ones in the next month or so because they will trickle out and get grabbed right away. It will probably be sometime in July until we see them in-stock regularly, outside of the more vanilla options.

Really? Cause, like I said, there were plenty of 970s on the shelf opening day- Apparently not a production shortage on those, huh?

Probably because people were going for the 980's as they were out on the same day.

Not to mention it can vary as there were shortages for both on release day and awhile after in many places.

I bought mine at Micro Center today. Micro Center opened 1 hour early just for the GTX 1080. Got there right at 9AM. Walked out 5 minutes later with two cards.

How can it be a paper launch if you see plenty of cards. I could have bought 500+ cards when they released. After an hour and 15mins they was all sold out at the retailers I checked here in DK. And new stock is ready Monday/Tuesday.

From OCUK.

Good lord man, I see lots of paper in that pic!
Who you trying to fool? ;)

BTW, I wouldn't want dust bunnies on my box! :(

Wow, people have definitely stepped up their game. I used to be a day one purchaser. which meant swinging by Fry's or Micro Center on the way home from work, not standing in line at 6AM. How long before people start camping out in front of MC to get a card?

This is worse than Skylake so far. Even the brief moments of availability at some of the sites have stopped.

I doubt paper launches like this are going to be common.

20 cards at a single store is a "paper launch"? LOL.

I guess maybe this guy thought an 18-wheeler full of them would be showing up or something.

You can buy one today here, and have it in your hands by Tuesday. (1 day postal.)

That's strange. Maybe $700 video cards just aren't that popular in Denmark?

I looked at the other countries that Nowinstock covers, and eBuyer (in the UK) seems like they are saying that they don't expect more FE models until June 17th.

Its called backorder and a complete open logistics chain.

GTX 1080 sold like hotcakes here on release.

Different cards, different dates. Asus Strix is dated June 18th. MSI gaming X is June 15th. Those got the longest dates.

I don't think GTX 1080 could be considered a paper launch. NV had product on the day they said they would, it just sold out.

Granted, I guess it could have been considered a paper launch after the event in Austin and the subsequent reviews, but NV was pretty clear on a retail availability date, and they kept their word on that.

I get the impression that most people who were really committed to getting a GTX 1080 and put forth some effort were able to get hold of one (at least in the US). We actually have a forum member (in this thread) that got two to run in SLI.

nVidia probably only sold a couple thousand cards at best. That's nothing. Whatever small amount retailers were allocated is gone. And now (if you believe what eBuyer is saying and it seems like Amazon is saying the same thing) they aren't getting more until the middle of June.

Yes, I would absolutely say that 20 cards for the greater Columbus metropolitan area is a "Paper Launch". Apparently it was the mail cart that showed up, not the 18-wheeler hahaha

This is getting a bit silly :) I'm not saying how good their production levels are - goodness knows past non awful. The point is that you can't tell with the initial burst of demand being so overwhelming.

Even the 970/80 - which presumably had absolutely no yield issues at all - had quite patchy availability for a bit after launch. The number on the main thread was 1 million of those selling in the first 3 months, and you wouldn't be shocked if say half of those were in the first month.

No reason to expect the 1070/80 to be selling notably worse than that - asides from the 1070 not being out yet of course ;) - which means huge numbers of cards to move about the place.

The term "Paper Launch" keeps morphing. This is a small volume card to begin with, 10s of thousands were likely on store shelves on Release Day. I can't think of a way to call this a Paper Launch.
