NVIDIA’s Low-End, GeForce GT 930 Rumored To Launch in Q1 2016

There’s a rumor from Chinese sources that NVIDIA might be releasing a low-end, GeForce GT 930 graphics card in Q1 2016. Now I don’t always report on low-end stuff but there was some crazy stuff in the rumor that made me post this report. The GeForce GT 930 would be a new low-end card but it won’t be based on just one GPU, but it will have several different SKUs making use of different GPUs

Maxwell flavor? Great. Definately AMD has a hard time with that.

Sorry for the rant, but releasing a 40 nm part at this moment is beyond pathetic and if this is true, it will heavily defeat AMD on how pathetic they will go.

There actually is a 28nm Fermi chip called GF117. Still it is old and has been rebranded like 4 times.

The 730 is currently GK208 and GF108, so that's basically just rebranding them. GM108 doesn't have a current desktop version, but it's the same 384 shader die as the 840M/940M mobile chip. At $90 it would be WAY overpriced compared to its competitors; it would need to drop almost immediately. You can already buy a 640 shader GDDR5 750Ti for $110 AR, and the R7 360 from the other guys would be decently faster than GM108 and is available for $80AR. The GM108 variant still wouldn't even get you HDMI 2.0 if you were wanting to use this as a cheap way to get 4k/60 to a monitor/TV.

Oh boy, that is a really bad idea... but sadly they even rebrand the 28 nm one, but the old 40 nm one.

exactly, if it's a new GPU with HDMI 2.0 and HEVC it would justify having a price near the 750 ti for that usage at least, even if it's only 384 sps

but... it could also be just GM108 which as far as I know is limited to the same hardware capabilities as GM107 (750 ti)

There definitely would be a market for a small, cheap GPU that can output 4k@60 4:4:4 with a great decoder. If this travesty of a naming scheme does go ahead I'd be shocked if they actually devoted the budget and engineering resources to doing a whole new spin, but the low end market from either vendor is way overdue for a new card.

There's never really been a holdoff on new products in old architectures prior to launching a new flagship. nVidia launched the GT 730 in June of 2014 before launching the 980 in September of that year, so I don't think them launching a 930 in Q1 would really give any information on when Pascal is going to launch.

I went about clicking the link,i ended up getting more interested with this comment then the actual GT 930.

If there really is a 960 ti,well that is way more interesting then the GT 930.

According to them one version will be GM108 (so 384 Maxwell v1 cores on a 64 bit bus).

GM108 is the same as GM107, it's Feature Set E decoder and does not support fixed function HEVC or VP9 decoding like GM206's Feature Set F decoder & HDMI 2.0/HDCP 2.2 on GM206.

If you want a low-end GPU that doesn't need external PCIe power with modern video codecs support & HDMI 2.0/HDCP 2.2 support, wait for Pascal GP107.

"Modern video codec support" is a moving target. For instance, VP10 is under development.

That's because there are no news about GP107 and GP108 and to make it worse AMD attacked that market with the RX 460.

The GT 730 i have is the GK208 Kepler 384 cuda cores Gddr5 model so its performance at 1600*900 is surprisingly adequate for my gaming needs.
However i really expected a Pascal/Maxwell based GT940/930 not these old worn out Kepler/Fermi rebrands in 2016.Its really disgusting by Nvidia.
Won't give AMD a free pass either.They still sell R5 230 for $50 which is an HD6450 rebrand which is a non GCN GPU.

I have those cores + GDDR3 64-bit version which was around $70 USD and is fanless. Rubbish for games, but fine for anything else. Except HEVC and some other video codecs. Was a stop-gap but new GPUs are seriously overpriced so now I'm still waiting. If it isn't a stripped Pascal version bleh.

I had a question related to this topic. I bought some GTX950 OC 2GB GDDR5 MSI cards. Do they decode HEVC and VP9, at 1080P and 4K, and at 10bit? I know that they have HDMI2.0 and can drive a 4K display. I'm hoping that the answer to the decoding questions is Yes.
