nV6800GT cores

I have to ask the question because I picked up a BFG 6800GT the other day and it seems to easily clock to 425/1100 without any problems at all. Does nV know they're putting out cores like this?

yes, it is too expensive to have a foundry to make seperate chips of the GT and ultra, so instead they underclock them or give the GTs the ones that dont pass the tests to become ultras

Yep, they know what they're doing. As Schadenfroth said, they only produce 6800 cores. Also, since the 6800nu couldn't touch the performce of an X800 Pro, and the 6800 Ultra was more expensive than the X800 Pro, Nvidia needed a part to fill the gap and compete with the X800 Pro at identical price range.

Overclocking also voids the warranty, and it's not guaranteed, so people buy 6800U's because they can be certain of what they are getting.
Your GT may overclock, but I expect there are a fair few which don't overclock that well.

Like mine. My 6800 will only do 400/1080 I was really excited thinking mine would do Ultra speeds.

ditto my xfx gt has a strong core it clocks to 440 .. but memory cant go above 1020 !!!! 😱

its all good though. I don't get the overclock. at 350/1000 (i dont oc my core) I can't find any game i cant confortably run at 1600x1200 high settings 8xaf 4xaa. So why bother ? 🙂

What does doom 3 run at those settings? 50 - 30 fps?

doom 3 runs at about 45-50fps at those settings

That's fairly unlikely. I pretty much doubt nVidia ever intended the 6800NU to compete with the X800Pro given it has half as much memory, much slower memory, and an MSRP $100 below the X800Pro?

1600x1200 4AA/8AF - Link:
6800GT (350/1000) = 43.6
6800Ultra (400/1000) = 46.2
6800Ultra (425/1000) = 49.5

So it's certainly feasible. But what are the minimum framerates though? Average doesnt always indicate the dips to 15-20 frames that contribute to stuttering, so you might be right about the playability factor being questionable. Of course I don't own the card, so don't want to start a fight between you guys.

It might actually be possible to run at those settings. I just ran a time demo with my 6800 GT at 400/1070 and got 40 fps on Ultra settings. There were some parts that were very slow though.

1600x1200 high, 4xaa. 46fps on timedemo1. k thanks.

farcry is lower
😱

but still playable. and btw to the other guy. I get absolutely no stuttering whatsoever in d3 at those settings. keep in mind 6800 series is basicly a video card made to play doom 3. rofl. sad but true.

My 6800 GT gets about 55 FPS at the those settings. But i run it at 420/1100 with my watercooling core never touches 50c.

And this is with crappy p4 3.2ghz and very bad memory timings ... i think they're something like 3-3-3-8.

I play it on 2001fp LCD and its very playable. Stutering here and there but it seems its becasue of my CPU.

Yeah, that's why the 6800GT and 6800U "coincidently" are pretty much equal to the X800Pro and X800XT in almost every other benchmark.

you dont need 4xAA at 16x12...

i barely notice it with AA off entirely, 2x completely clears all AA for me at 16x12 and above.

? 6800gt stomps x800pro.. except in a few where they are close. Its a widely agreed on fact that the gt beats that pants of the x800pro.

If you realize this, why do you post things that might mislead a buyer into thinking the 6800 series is only optimal for Doom 3 when it's obviously a good choice for any game?

perhaps you may end up down the garden path from what I said. I just assume most cognizant individuals can understand english properly is all.

He probably means the card is fantastic for Doom3, not that it sucks for everything else.
