built a new box and got the nv4_disp BSOD while playing Stranglehold

sys specs:

MSI P35 FR
C2D 6550
2 gigs Crucial
eVGA 6800GS
Corsair HX540 PSU

nothing's overclocked, googling turned up some links talking about this error, seems most of the people having it have older systems, like Nforce 2 or GeForce 3/4 cards. The only resolution I saw was to boot into safe mode, un/re-install the drivers. A few other links spoke on using older drivers. Not sure what I should do about it, just a little mad a new system with all fairly good components will BSOD on me in less than a week.

the msi p35's early bios revisions have some faults in them even though I never encountered one with mine. Try going to MSI's site and doing live update - you'll get checksum error after reboot, but after that, my system is running ok with Steam.

I will do that, I should have updated my BIOS regardless doh, I always forget the most basic shit when you build a new pc.
