nv4_disp driver has stopped working normally

During a game, the computer freezes. After 60 seconds or so, it crashes to desktop, and it looks like it does when windows first loads up with no video driver.

The message (in a windows pop-up, not BSOD) is:

"The nv4_disp driver has stopped working normally. Please save your work...blah blah"

What the hell?

I have:
abit a8n-sli
x2 3800+
7800gt x 2 in SLi

Is your card overclocked?

That happened to me a few times. I was able to mostly aleviate the problem by reducing my overlock a few percent. I was also thing about getting a fan to blow on video card but I'm note sure that heat is a problem. I have an eVGA 7800GT CO overclocked to 500/1220 and my temps reach 70 C max.

My cards are the XFX, so they are overclocked from the factory.

450/1000, I believe...I might look into underclocking...

This is 99% of the time a hardware issue, i.e. card is overheating, card is failing, etc.

I have a similar problem with an NV4_disp.dll error after standby. Every so often my computer comes out of standby with no display and if you can get it to restart blind, you can see the error message. Pretty sure it's a bug in the drivers.

I got this message before.. it was something with dx9.0C and sp2.. try reinstall dx9 and sp2 again..

if none works, a fresh install
