im sure lots of people already have 480watts or better. i have a antec 480 TB so im all set if i decided to upgrade, but i dont think i will for a while longer. im impressed with call of duty's 16x12 scores but would want better far cry numbers at that res.

Looks very impressive, now I am even more excited to see how ATI answers with R420

It's 1.5~2x faster than current cards from what I've read so far.

The 9700Pro was about 2x the speed of the Ti4600 with AA/AF (mostly what's being used for all the benchmarks at the moment), so it's about average for a new card.
Looks promising so far.

you should actually read it:

You'd have to go back quite a bit in the history of graphics cards to find a performance leap of similar magnitude. Maybe the transition from 3dfx's Voodoo1 to the Voodoo 2 comes close. Or the jump from NVIDIA's TNT2 to the GeForce 256 DDR, or perhaps the transition from ATi's Radeon 8500 to the 9700 Pro

The Programmable Video Processor looks awesome. The screenshots of the tech demos look great and excellent performance...very impressive!

It seems to be about an average of 1.75x the performance of the FX5950U, which is nothing to shake a stick at. Now we just have to wait and see if the R420 delivers the speed increase it promised.

Insomniak: If you are only looking at 1600x1200x32, yes, you're correct, but that is not "most situations".

Is it me, or did FS forget to disable VSync in UT2K4?

Do the words "CPU bound" mean anything to ya? That is why the 5950,9800XT,6800 are a lot of the times almost equal at 1024x768.
Up the res and the 6800 sprints away with all the toys on and probably more than twice the AA/AF quality of the 5950.
I have a bruise just below my neck from my jaw dropping so fast. No matter what ATI brings with the 420, a very high congratulations is
in order for Nvidia. They finally got their act together "again". The image quality in far cry still belongs to the 9800XT definately. But a patch from
Crytek may iron that out. And dont worry about the 480W power supply. Nvidia is releasing a custom PSU just for these babies.
Real enthusiasts wont mind having to buy another PSU.

All I have to say for now is a big "bravo" to Nvidia, for proving that a big company can learn from the mistakes.
To be honest I'm reluctant to believe anyone at this pre-release point of the gpu. But indications and specifications of the 6800 are showing that generally it will perform like a super DX9 card.
Again BRAVO NVIDIA. :)

Yeah, they do, but since the test didn't specify whether it was botmatch or some custom demo, I wasn't sure if that was the case, even given the comment regarding CPU-limitation.

Indeed, they deserve props for getting themselves on track again, and this performance certainly explains ATI's apparently last-moment solution of releasing a 16 pipeline GPU.

On the surface, part of me thinks "well, that's nuts, a PSU just for a video card", but then, when I really think about it, GPUs are becoming nothing less than an entire enclosed system: CPU, Mobo chipset, Bus interface, Mem. Controller, Memory, power regulators, etc., all have GPU-based counterparts now.

Real enthusiasts wont mind having to buy another PSU.
Hmmm, are you saying that because I don't have the money to shell out for the best parts all the time I'm not a real enthusiast? I'm enthusiastic about hardware in general, and I wish I could afford to buy it. Does that count for nothing anymore? :p

I bet you it will run OK on a good 400w PS like ANTEC, which really runs its rated power.

$500 and a 480W PS? Wow. Nice scores, but I still run most games at 1024x768 with low or no AA/AF, so it would be a waste. I'm also one of those guys that can hardly tell PS 1.4 from PS 2.0, so what need is PS 3.0? I'll wait to see what happens in a year if they release a good bang for the buck model (akin to the Ti4200 back in the 4600 days). Good to see Nvidia finally back on top, I like their drivers. Don't forget WM9 support in hardware...

I'm still amazed at how many fps this thing churns up at HALO, i'd buy one soley based on that :)

errrr,

so if I bought this card, I'd have to dust off my old Briggs-n-Stratton gas powered generator?

I think people are over-reacting, it's not gonna be that bad.

I see these type of comments, and my head just starts to hurt. The same type of thing is often said about Intel or AMD "matching" the other at the last second. You CANNOT make these types of major architectural changes at the "last-moment". Whatever the number of pipelines, that type of decision was made LONG before "last-moment".

Looks as though it would be a waste to purchase a NV40 without a power supply upgrade and a CPU upgrade. I think anything less than a Athlon 64 3400 would be a waste. I'm probably going to wait until AMD releases their Athlon 64 3700 before I upgrade my video card. By then, the card will be lower priced and the new processors will mate perfectly with the performance of these cards. However, I do have a preference for ATI's AA settings, thus I'm going to wait for ATI's product to come out before I do anything.
