NV35 - Will it really be that big?

5900 as the number possibly.

The Radeon 9700PRO was the ATi flagship for 6 months, before the revision to the 9800, a small performance increase over its predecessor, normally ATi change numbers totally with each new major revision. (R100 was I believe, the 7x00 series, R200 was 8500, R300 was 9500-9700)
nVidia seems to be the same (NV20 was the GF3, NV25 was GF4, NV30 was FX line) and each itineration changed the model numbers (NV20 - GF3 Tix00, NV25 - GF4 Ti4x00, NV30 - GF FX 5x00), so, if the NV35 (logical number progression) is really the same sort of step as previous generations, why is the rumour floating that it will only be the GF FX 5900, surely a change to GF FX 6x00 would be logical, unless, like ATi, the change isn't that big (9700 -> 9800).
Seems like it would be an odd way to name the card, if that is indeed what happens.
If it does happen, I wouldn't expect to see a huge performance increase, if they make it a 6x00 card, then I would expect something quite powerful from it.

However, these names/numers for the card are speculation, and we'll have to wait for the real name and real performance figures before really concluding anything. I would be slightly suprised to see it given the name 5x00 though.

but do you really think you should rate the video card purely on the basis of its model number/name? i really dont know if nvidia is going to pull it off again with the new video card or if it will be another bombshell. we all thought the FX 5800 was going to rule all video cards but look what happened. we'll just have to see what cards nvidia deals out this time

People should give the FX5800 some credit for being a big step above the GF4 series. Even though it is annoyingly hot, loud, and expensive, it still does a decent job and is close to being on par performance wise with the 9700 pro. IMO, there is something wrong with it having wasted cycles or something resulting in its getting sooooo hot and needing super crazy cooling. If Nvidia is smart and wants to stay in the Performance game, then the NV35 is gona really have to knock peoples socks off.

I wouldn't sleep on Nvidia too long... They held the crown for a long time, they will be back.

No, if anything the NV35 only needs to fix the flaws of the NV30 in order for it to be a success. If it does not fix the flaws it does need to be insanely fast which some poeple are quoting rather insane rumors of how fast this god of a gpu will be.

To me I'd think the NV35 will be a somewhat significant change from the NV30 as it should fix some of the problems with AF and the 256bit memory controller should provide the greater bandwidth giving it a slight advantage in the higher resolutions the NV30 has already claimed in the lower.

My biggest concerns with an NV35 powered card still remain in how loud it will be and the cost as well. Sure may be the fastest things in all areas but for how much and how loud remains to be answered.

Doesn't anyone find it funny that this same type of discussion was going on about the NV30. "Oh yeah, it's going to blow ATi out of the water." Then, bam, nothing.

The way I see it, unless you have proof (and no, "I heard from my friend's girlfriend's dog groomer's cousin" doesn't count) that the rest of us don't, you shouldn't make any comments about what it "will" do. Let's all just wait until its released, then we can all talk about what it DOES.

ironically i think it it going to be nvidias $79 directx 9 passive cooled card that will hurt ATI the most (business wise)

General rule of thumb...

1) The chipset which the enthusiast finds annoying because of the deceptive name will probably end up making the chip make alot of money.

For example, Geforce4 MX. nVidia is selling these things like hotcakes.

I predict the FX 5200 will do well also. It has all the marketing bullets, at a very low price point. It will be a standard option on many many OEM machines.

2) The chipset which enthusiasts swarm to will probably not make the chipset maker alot of money.

For example, the ATI Radeon 9500. These cores are bigger than they should be (basically 9700's with pipelines shut off), and are not very economical for ATI to make. Hence the 9600 redesign.

From a technology point of view, the 5200 is not very impressive but I believe it is a great chip from a business point of view.

There is considerablly less hype this time around. Before the NV30, it was Nvidia who was hyping, while everyone else followed. We all followed because they are a top company and have a good reputation. Nvidia has not gone crazy this time around and although it is not a out of know where like the GF4 sort of was, they are being vary cautions. We have already seen what the NV30 is capable of, and it is unlikely the NV35 will be worse. Even if it only performs on par with the 9800 pro it will still be a success in some ways. Comparing the leaked specs to the current NV35 show some promise, and it IS LIKELY that it will kick in a major way. Actually, I would have bought the 5800 ultra if it was sooooo hot and expensive compared to a similarly performing card at a lower price.
