NV35 (FX 5900 ultra?) could come sooner than most people think.

Looks like it MIGHT come out shortly after the 9800 is in stores so as not to leave the FX ultra to be eaten alive, but obviously noone is holding their breath after the FX delay :|
This was posted today at Nvnews after one of their employees talked to Brian Burke from Nvidia:

We've managed to gather some information regarding the upcoming GPU line-up from NVIDIA. And no, these are not rumors.

Let's look back at GDC 2003. Just to clear things up, Jen-Hsun Huang did state during the press conference that the new demo (with four Dawns) was running on the next generation enthusiast GPU that they will tell us about "very shortly". You can see it here.

So what products will NVIDIA bring in to the market? We don't know specifically, but it will be a refresh of NV30 architecture. The upcoming series of products will be in fact based on NV35 chip.

We all tend to point fingers at companies that don't deliver their products on time. NVIDIA's product cycle did NOT change since the GeForce FX initial launch. By looking back at previous product releases as a guide, NVIDIA will indeed have a spring refresh of their enthusiast products. The cycles are always six to nine months. NV30 broke that cycle due to its new architecture and the move to .13 micron design process. Note that this does not put NVIDIA behind other companies (ATi).

To sum things up...Although NV30 was late that does not mean that the NV3X parts scheduled to follow have been pushed back, I confirmed this with Brian Burke of NVIDIA. The NV31/NV34 line of products came out as scheduled. NVIDIA is right on target to refresh their enthusiast line-up in the spring, as they usually do. So the 9800 Pro's fight may not be with the GeForce FX 5800 Ultra, but with the yet to be announced NV35.

This is exausting..I dont think I can go another round. I am off to the Hot Deals area to get lost in some mindless shopping. 🙂

why even release NV 30 then. what was the point of it if its just getting replaced a month after it actually hits retail?

remember, the nv30 was supposed to come out last year sometime. besides, much of the technology in that chip filtered down to nvidia's mainstream cards, so it wasn't a total waste.

it's a good thing ati has been so competetive, otherwise nvidia would be holding off with their nv35.

it's my opinion that ati will hold the performance crown for at least 1 year from now tho...no flames please 🙂

Good question, IF this comes true, my guess is that Nvidia's plan is probably to get the FX line of Gpu's out in all segments of the market most importantly, and for their highend release a limited supply of FX's and FX ultras before they are replaced with a refresh highend part (NV35), so they can again be the leader in all segments. Just a guess though, I'm sure ATI isn't sitting idly by either.

Good to see they're sticking to their product schedule despite the TSMC set backs. To be honest though, I'm with Bentvalve and couldn't care less at the moment about the latest Nvidia/Ati products. Too much recently has kinda drained me, and I love video cards....

SickBeast - It is good that ATI have been so competetive, but it hasn't influenced Nvidia's shedule, they've always stuck to their 6 month cycle as closely as possible regardless of competition factors. So I don't think they would have 'held off' with the NV35.

I just hope NVidia will be able to keep up, this competition is great fo those buying the almost highend cards! I got a 9700 non pro for $120!!!

yeah competiton!

Heh it looks like I wrote that little news bit, as that's what I've been saying the last 2 months 😉

The reason for launching NV30 (5800 Ultra) was just to kick off the rest of the NV30 product line. Every new series needs a flagship, even if it is late, limited, underperforming, loud, hot and overpriced.

My thoughts exactly.

Bump for anyone interested.
They don't want to hear it 😉 Even if it showed up on the Inquirer, somehow it would get overlooked and never make its way here (despite our resident populations of Inquirer groupies 😉 😛 ).

I`m interested,I just hope it`s true, whatever you may think of Nvidia they know how to make drivers 😉.

Ya I tend to agree, I can understand people losing a LITTLE faith in Nvidia after the FX coming out late and slightly underpowered, I did myself, but people have taken it WAY too far IMO. ATI kicked ass this round no question about it, but Nvidia was on top of the game for YEARS (did people forget so quickly?) and I'm confident they will be again soon.

^ Well if they want it to be a Spring refresh part than it would have to come out or at least be launched by May. Maybe June for retail availability? Who knows, I'm sure we'll hear more news about it soon. One thing is for sure, it better have a 256bit memory bus this time 😉

Definitely agree about the 256-bit mem interface. Itf they can't get their mem controllers to incorporate a 256-bit bus AND DDR-II, scrapping the DDR-II would be my preference. A true 8 pixel pipe would be nice too. 8x2 maybe!?!?!? :Q

😀
