I really wouldn't be spending $400 more. I got the 9700pro for $315, after GC's around $200. I'd be returning it and exchanging it. Then I'd have to figure out whether I want to go thru BB with a 10% coupon and use my GC's again or if I just wanna go online and get it for cheaper than MSRP.
Don't get me wrong, the 9700pro is a fantastic piece of
HARDWARE, the
SOFTWARE just isn't up to snuff. For some reason, I have to perform voodoo just to get my damn TV Tuner to work (which worked with no probs whatsoever with my GF4 Ti4200 Turbo). Even when I get it working (through a cryptic process of rebooting, installing/uninstalling various combinations of hardware and software), I can't record in PVR mode, it locks my system. Its definitely a problem with video overlay and directdraw. I've tried every combination of drivers/directX/wdm drivers and I get the same problems. And what happened to ATI's UDA? I have to download 4 different patches to get "up-to-date". Anyways, the 9700pro has spoiled me in the sense I can run every game at 1280 (LCD native rez) with everything turned up and AA and AF, but still, the sporadic drops in frames is annoying as well on a $400 piece of hardware.
My problems are probably pretty unique, but then again most people don't run a system as stressed as mine. Driver/hardware conflicts are inevitable, but my TV tuner is a pretty integral part of my HTPC (I can't play my XBox on my LCD without it, and of course the more obvious features like watching TV and recording). I'm not concerned about a slight increase/decrease in performance from the GF FX, as long as it performs similarly to the 9700pro. It also has the same nice additions I have grown accustomed to on the 9700pro like hardware DVD decoding.
