NV Sliencer 5 - Is mine faulty?

Hi,

I had some concerns about how hot my XFX 6800GT PCI-E was running. It was idling at 62 and getting up to about 70 under full load with an ambient temperature of 46.

So I installed a NV Silencer 5 and my GPU was idling at 65 and getting up to 90 at full load. I tired re-applying the Arctic Silver thermal paste several times, (after cleaning with Isopropyl Alcohol) in different configurations (using more, and then less), but to no avail.

I have now put the stock cooler back on and the card is back to idling at 62, although it seems to be running over 80 at full-load now. Could my thermal paste be at fault? Am I applying it wrong?

Also, the NV Silencer 5 was louder in my opinion then the stock cooling - even though it claims to be quiet! Did I get a faulty one?

Please help me get to the bottom of this, I'm worried about damaging my 'brand new' card.

Thanks!

That explains why the stock cooling may be producing higher temps now... but not why the NV Silencer 5 seemed to be so much worse.

I never had problems that extreme, but when I installed my nv5 the temps weren't great. It turns out that tightening the backplate thing helped. Don't be scared to tighten it on there real good.

there was something where the ram sinks or one part of teh nv silencer wasnt touchign properly leem see if i can find it...

edit here it is

ClICK!

1- Clean the sink and the GPU and the RAM.
2- Apply paste to the GPU and the RAM chips and Install.
3- Remove the sink and inspect. Is there paste on the sink? By inspecting the sink, you can tell if the sink mounts properly on all the chips or not. If there is no paste on the sink from all the chips, there may be a component on the board in the way not allowing the sink to be seated properly.

Aye make sure you thoroughly clean the thing first. Meaning you can see yourself in the actual chipset, and you can clearly see the Samsung words and numbers on all of the rams.

When I first installed it, I was afriad to tighten it because those rubber washers looked like they were about to snap any moment. My core wasnt even touching the NV5 so I reapplied a larger portion of AS5 and tightened it good. Now I am getting just a little less than stock temps with none of the noise. It should be REALLY quiet

I too had this problem. I had to tighten down the screws a bit more (was a pain in the ass, because the nv Silencer 5 blocks the AGP locking mechanism on my motherboard!)

I didn't use the rubber washers on my board and the Silencer 5... I reused the backplate that was in use on the stock cooler and just tightend the screws up in a x pattern. I get idle temps of 45-48C on the GPU now... Before, it was higher.

I wouldn't tighten the screws too much. There are reports of broken screws!

If there is not good contact, you should find out why and correct it.

You really shouldn't apply more thermal compound than is shown in the instructions. Using more will trap heat, not transfer it to the cooler.

Well I think I am going to have to accept defeat, I'm afraid I don't have the patience (or nerve) to start sanding the thing down to make it fit... I think I will get a Zalman VF700 instead, as it has separate GPU and RAM heat-sinks so it should make better contact. In addition my XFX stock cooling seems quieter then the NV Silencer 5.

Thanks for all your help guys.
