NV 780 GTX buyers remorse from AMD 290X card

Where i live(AU) pc hardware is quite a bit more coin compared to other locales. i built a new machine around a 780 GTX. Paid a dear price for the 780 and truly wanted the TITAN. seeing the new amd 290X release hit me with buyers regrets. Super card as fast or faster than TITAN and a goooooood round cheaper.

will be returning the 780 GTX. Lucky me I am still able to return for refund and then purchase R9 290X. anyone else stung by this launch and how bad the nvidia price was?

Well we all saw it coming awhile ago..

But yeah, in AUS the prices are ridiculous. 780s are going for well above $800.. a 7970 Ghz is only $350 for comparison. There's an "NV TAX" for less informed, back-water croc riding aussies.

Dont get the R290X yet, just wait for custom models. The reference cooler is junk, too loud in uber mode, and too weak for a good OC.

After reading the 290X reviews, and how it runs super hot, and stock cards have no overclocking room, I am not feeling any buyer's remorse. I am pretty sure an overclocked 780 is just as fast, and runs cooler than a stock 290X.

I am not in the market for a space heater.

No remorse here.290X is only a couple % faster than 780 from [H] and 780 has tremendous oc potential.If I wanted to buy a card today I would wait till 780Ti releases.

Buyer's remorse is independent of later acquired knowledge. And it's not like they could have known the 290x was coming at such a price point.

However most of the people on this board are fairly sophisticated and they probably purchased the 780's with full knowledge that it was priced high due to a lack of competition.

Would you have buyer's remorse if say, MSI or Asus R290X is coming out soon with their awesome coolers, card is running 80C and can handle 1.2ghz? For a typical $10-20 premium over the reference models.. So, $569 for a massive, massive performance lead over Titan? (Ref R290X averages ~850mhz in games currently due to crap cooler, and its beating Titan!).

Lol. I'm not buying this. Overclocked the 780 is faster than a 290X. Refer to LinusTechTips and Overclock reviews. Granted $550 is a good price, but the card runs crazy hot and is loud by comparison.

Although, the 780 is fixing to get a price drop, so from that angle...yeah. Should have waited.

I wouldn't think there's much buyer's remorse. The 780 is still an extremely fast card, and it likely runs cooler as well. I've been favoring AMD with my last few purchases, and the pricing of the 290X puts it within my range for an upgrade, but the noise and heat concerns have basically put me off it. I think I would actually buy a 780 over the 290X if they were close to the same price. If I had already bought a 780 before this launch I'd keep it even though I would have payed $100 more for it.

You budgeted for the 780 GTX at its current price. That means that apparently it was cheap enough with enough performance for you then. It's performance hasn't changed just because something else came out after it.

Yes. Let's see those cards and what kind of overclocking/noise/heat/power performance they have compared to the super quiet "780 SC ACX' that I have right now, and maybe I will reconsider. I upgraded from a loud 7970 to the gtx 780, so I am not biased towards either company. It's strictly about performance and noise+heat generated for me.

I have no stake in this because gtx670 sli still outperforms these cards at my resolution. Maybe 20nm

The R290x launch sounds like Bulldozer launch.. There's a reason why it runs hot and noisy... AMD already did the O/C on the R290X... If Nvidia cut the price for the gtx 780 will the buyer's of the R290X have buyer's remorse?

Its not the same price though. Here in the states it is $100 more. But in Australia, where the OP is, its closer to $300 more.

I imagine it was very loud but that is to be expected from a single fan, blower design. There performance is there, they just need to get quiet coolers for this card. One can go with watercooled version for a price of gtx780:

I agree. I think the R290X would need a water cooled solution to get any kind of significant overclocking performance out of it.

No, because you should of waited to see what the 290x was capable of before throwing money down.

Besides all that the 780 is cooler and quieter and overclocks pretty well. It might just be worth $100 more to someone.

The 780's price was always pretty nonsensical, with the 770 giving you 88% (or whatever it is) of the performance for $250 less.

I'd be shocked if the 780 sticks around once the 780Ti is out. Price will probably be set to match the 290X, and everything else below there stays the same price.

Need mantle performance. Awesome card for the price but running at 95 degrees is a little too high for my comfort because it also leads to other components running unnecessarily hotter. My final judgement is watching to see how after market coolers perform, if not I'm going nvidia.

OP - which model GTX do you own? Obviously you live in a country where you pay premiums for tech, so this may not apply to everyone. That said, If i owned a 780 HOF edition that overclocks beyong Titan performance I wouldn't worry.

Such is life when you invest in the latest and greatest. It's a known fact that top tier cards give you the worse value for dollar long term, especially when you are buying them at time of release. The 290x is a unique situation though, as it's MSRP is below what the competition offers in the same segment.

I've seen plenty of people talk about 780's and voltage "hacks" to get them up to insane speeds. I see this as no different, if it can be done lets talk about it since it adds value to the purchase.

The nice thing about AMD ref cards is you have the option sometimes available.

Anybody who had a ref design 5850 had the same option to flash the Asus 5870 modded bios....Didn't hurt the card at all as long as you could keep it cool.

Bios flash is not a big deal really....I guess technically you could call it modded. More like enhanced in reality.

Looking at your sig it seems like you weren't happy with stock performance (clock speed) of your card....Go figure!
