That's what i initially thought too..
then i thought, train.. nut, must be a nut that flew off the train...
WTF that is random!

sad story.
My psychology professor mentioned that there is recently a crisis for care of mental health patients. No one wants to fund for it anymore, and most psychiatric wards have been shut down this past decade.

Ooh...I think abandoned psych wards are the creepiest thing ever. Especially when the buildings fall in to serious disrepair.

I need to watch some horror movies tonight,

There's an old mental hospital that was turned into a museum. Some friends of mine in college held a play that took place throughout the hospital, very creepy and cool.

We then went out to one of the non-rehabbed buildings to check it out, and that shit was scary. No lights, floors caved in all over, all the hospital stuff just stacked around in various states of disarray. We stupidly went down into the basement, no flashlights just cell phones, and there was this huge tunnel filled with piles of creepy miscellanea that went way farther than it seemed it should have.

I lost interest at that point (read: I wussed out) and left. Later I found out one of my friends fell through a staircase trying to get back up. He was ok but shit that would've been terrifying.

The father of the nutball should be prosecuted for failing to either turn his mentally ill son in, or pulling a tighter rein on him. When you irresponsibly allow a son you know has serious issues to have free rein like that, you deserve to get the book thrown at you.

This is the sh!t that scares me everyday I commute. I live in Jersey City, and used to take the same light rail. Poor guy didn't even see this one coming. :(

This is what scares you? You're probably more likely to die from an octopus attack.

Or a dolphin mugging.

Or a zebra suicide bomber.

Or an elephant porn movie.

Or a stingray impaling.

Or a Greyhound decapitation?

Or a themepark ride acciddent

The article says the guy has mental problems, but he's not necessarily "insane." You want it to be like the 1800's where we lock up all our retarded and crazy kids in a closet and slide food under the door a couple times a day? And why does everyone have to blame somebody, is it so hard to accept that nobody could have reasonably prevented this except the crazy guy?

Somebody could have prevented it; the parents or bystanders.

I certainly agree with you, it could have been prevented, which makes it five times worse, especially considering it was in a pretty populated area (or at least I'd imagine so).

However, he should have been shut away, psychowards are not the Ritz, but they're not the so-called 1800 cells you have been alluding to.

You don't agree with me  From the sound of the article there's not much anybody could have done until after the fact. Just because it's public doesn't mean anyone would realize anything is going on until it's too late, and parents can't always be held responsible for what their 24 year old kids do.

And once more, from the article:
"He's crazy and his father can't control him," Hamilton (the neighbor) said. "He did everything he could." (Dad didn't give him free rein)
"It does not appear that they (the stabber and stabee) interacted at all," DeFazio (the county prosecutor) said. (The crazy didn't give any indication about what he was going to do)
About prosecuting Taylor, DeFazio said, "The fact that he may have mental health problems doesn't necessarily mean he is legally insane." (If he's not legally insane Dad's options are probably rather limited, going back to the neighbor's comment about doing everything he could.)
