Going over $400+shipping is against the rules unless rebates getcha back down below. Try to avoid sketchy stores that have a history of unfulfilled rebates and again, no coupons or pricematches unless the price without is already under $400.

Looking at ~2-3GHz or Eqiv (Celeron, Athlon, etc), 256MB, 40-80GB, KB, Mouse
+ Bonus for AGP or PCIx slot (future expansion)
+ Bonus for 512MB
+ Bonus for >80GB
++ Bonus for no REBATES

NEW/Temp: 12/21-12/24 - Fatwallet link to Staples $250 ($199/ar) / Compaq System AMD Sempron 2800+ ends 12/24 and is regional to NorthEast USA

Walmart Stuff (from post below) $199-$399ish, mostly non-winxp systems.

NEW HP - Sempron or Celeron - for $379 (After Manuf. Rebate)

Dell Poweredge 420SC currently $349 (changes a lot from $250-350) + OS needed and no Sound, controversial expansion options just adding because someone else surely will.

Gateway 3200s for $399 (After Manuf. Rebate)

Evertek (wholesaler--need resellers license) and Compgeeks (carrries many of the same items--sell to everyone) have a few refurbs w/ 90-180day warranties <$400, but I think the warranty is through them.

Just a start, I plan to update here if I find better deals. Please feel free to add your own. If you don't think these deals are hot, feel free to say so but only if you can add to the thread with something better.

No complaining about brands.

The top 3 look decent to me. Not sure why you only think the Dell is worth it.

Way to threadcrap :(

Sure they may not be the best computers out there, but there are always people looking for cheap systems and these fit the bill perfectly. Remember, not everyone is as enthusiastic when it comes to computers and all they really need is something to get on the internet and check email.

I know these deals aren't hot-I-need-to-buy-one-right-now stuff, but, folks are still looking for holiday purchases and there's not a lot of options left. Figured I'd try and consolidate into one thread the choices. I really don't mind if people complain, but, like I said in the first post, if you think it sucks, post something to back it up.

Historically, this time of year is actually not the best time to buy, and it seems like it takes 30-45 days after to get things going again for the hot deals. (I suspect priceprotection influences that a lot).

So, that's all I have to say about this subject (won't bump it again), I'll update the first post with additional deals as I come across them or as other folks add to the thread with contributions. Thanks to those folks in advance.

You forgot the price he should attach to all his hours of tech support if something goes wrong for one of his friends. I will never build a PC for anyone but myself ever again.

It changes almost every day. I got mine for about 279 after rebate, but have added about $400 worth of stuff to it, so it no longer qualifies. It does seem to be the highest quality listed.
